I have been looking at very well cut .8 -.9 diamonds. I think my girl would be happier with a 1.0 diamond. I have about $4500 to spend on the stone. Do you folks think going to 1.0 with a little lower cut would be better than getting a very well cut .8 or .9? I am looking for a Eye Clean, SI1 or VS2, H or G color if that helps.

Thanks for your thoughts.

i think your girl would be happier with an excellent/ideal cut .8 or .9 diamond rather than a not so good cut 1 carat diamond that's going to look smaller anyway. you can always drop the desired color and clarity, and still get an excellent/ideal cut diamond that is a carat or more!

Oh ringer... please don't sacrifice on cut! You will never be sorry if you buy a well-cut stone... but I fear you may deeply regret someday NOT buying one. And believe it or not, you may not have to sacrifice on size, either... check out the great links above, for starters.

There is a wealth of information, and many diamond choices here on PS. Be patient, do your homework, consider possibly lowering your color/clarity parameters (well cut stones tend to "hide" inclusions very well, and in lower color grades will still face up VERY white)... and I think you will be able to come in very close to the 1 carat mark, with a GREAT CUT stone, and all within your budget.

If by "sacrificing cut" you mean going from a .9 on the HCA to a 1.6, then fine. But do not stray away from ideal proportions so much that you end up with a shallow stone or a "steep & deep" cut--two common categories of lesser-cut qality diamonds.

The stones others have found for you here present viable soluttions for your situation. I would go this route.

good news folks!! Sweetie has decided she likes a solitaire setting. This frees up more cash and should let me get her a Ideal cut 1.0ct

Ringer,

First of all, if you are satified with almost a carat you will save HUGE bucks.

A .99 let's say H SI1 will sell for $1000-1500 less than a 1.00 H SI1!

Over $1000 for .01 carats. Something to think about. There is a psychological element involved.

You can definitely sacrafice some cut for carats and have a great stone. An AGS 000 cut will look as good as a branded hearts and arrows. A H & A stone with VG VG symetry and polish will look just as good as EX EX. Just don't stray too far. You can get a 1.15 stone for $2400 like a person on another thread, don't do it!

For your budget you can get an AWESOME stone from .99-1.18.

I just bought a 1.16 with a big fat face, I, super clean SI that's hard to even see with a loup, AGS 000, hearts arrows. $5250. I hunted A LOT. But if I could get a .25mm bigger stone and have the Polish VG instead of ID, I'd do it in a second.

Have fun. If you are in NYC area, there are several PS vendors there.
