hi, everyone --

i''m seriously considering a specific diamond (from an online store) that meets all my criteria:

0.90 carat
AGS ideal 0 cut [depth 61.6%, table 56%, crown 34 deg, pavilion 40.9 deg, pointed cutlet, girdle med to slightly thick]
F color
SI1 clarity

however, i am concerned about the plot on the AGSL cert (.jpg attached). is this showing a feather/crack on the girdle that would detrimentally affect durability and/or possibly grow bigger? the line/mark seems somewhat wide and broken instead of thin and continuous so is this actually the standard symbol for a feather or is this just indicating an inclusion or graining?

i know to really say you need to look at the stone, but i''d appreciate your opinion on how you would proceed given the above information. stay away? or buy and have it looked at afterward to reassess? its $5k and i can return it if necessary.

thanks!!!

Ed, the very best thing to do: Call the vendor and ask them to describe the inclusions to you. Ask if they are feathers that break the surface. As long as you aren't going tension setting and as long as they don't break the surface, you should be good to go!

Plot drawings, in general, are terrible 2 dimensional representations of three dimensional shapes. You must see a diamond, in the flesh, or have someone who you trust, describe what they actually see.

A clarity plot can help assure you that your diamond is not damaged or the one you left with a jeweler the week before, but it is not a good tool for judging clarity potential problems.

My question is whether the vendor will be responsible if the stone cracks during setting. With the location of the inclusions, I bet you could protect them with the prongs, but I would be worried about the stone during setting. Other than that, I think this looks good for an SI1!

To offer some balance on this, I'll tell you what my appraiser said when I asked for his opinion on the durability of a stone I was considering as a side-stone on my e-ring. It that had an open feather on one of the pavilion facets.

He said "Because it's located on the pavilion side, it really doesn't pose any problem, and I would feel comfortable buying such a diamond".

He has over 25 years in the business, and I trust him implicitly. All inclusions are not equally troublesome.

thanks everyone for your advice and comments. i decided to go ahead and buy the diamond and will have it checked out afterwards (talked to the vendor and got some good info, but not all the details i wanted). hopefully, the feather does not break the surface and i will be good to go!
