OK, so I''m proposing to my gf soon, and I have begun the arduous task of learning about diamonds, risng, the 4 C''s, etc. I just wanted some advise from some of you on this board. I have lurked quite a bit and it seem slike a lot of people here are both knowledgeable and willing to aid others.

I do not have a set price, but I am trying to not go over $4500 or so.

I have asked some advice from people, and I have gotten different responses. Some say cut is the most important and others say size.

I have been on BlueNile and some other sites. I guess mostly I have been looking right around 1 carat, good to ideal cut, VS2, color I or above.

Well, I am open to suggestions.

I plan on white gold. She does not like yellow gold, nor do I.

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

Congratulations and welcome! It''s great you came here first before committing to a ring, now you have many more options.

I think you would find that most people here would say ''Cut, Cut, Cut'' is THE most important thing. A beautifully cut diamond will outshine and look bigger than a poorly cut diamond.

Just to get you started here''s a stone from Whiteflash, a well-respected internet vendor. The PS discounted wire price is $4563. It''s an I VS2 and 1.02 ct. Put a classic Tiffany style whitegold setting with it for $230 and you''re not too much over budget!

The link for the setting is:

http://www.whiteflash.com/Engagement-Rings/Styles/Solitaire/4-Prong--Tiffany--Style--18k-Gold_994.htm

This would look just gorgeous! The stone a grade of Excellent from GIA for the cut. It will look beautiful.

Anyway I''m sure more knowledgeable people will have more options for you soon. Try the ''Search by cut'' tool to see more, and also have a look at the tutorials.

Best of luck!

Oh darn! I just tested the link and noticed that stone has been sold! Sorry! I"ll have another look around...

Thanks for the suggestions. What about this one?

You should ask for a copy of the AGS report (just to make sure it is the new AGS light performance one,) as well as if there are negative effects of the "very strong blue" flouresence.
