Hi Legion,

I am not an expert on diamonds but I have been hanging around the forum for quite some time now and have recently purchased a beautiful engagement ring from whiteflash. The color and clarity of your selected diamond are fine for a mounted engagement ring however ( and this is completely up to you and varies with each person) if I was in your position I would sacrifice some of the carat size and go for an ideal cut diamond or even a cut above ideal (AGS 0). Ideal cut diamonds provide excellent fire and scintillation and look even bigger so if you choose say 0.9-1 carat cut above diamond my guess is it will be asily comparable size-wise to your 1.18 AGS 2 selection due to enhanced brilliance and fire.
I emphasize once again however that I am not a specialist and am speaking from the little knowledge I have acquired from this forum. Wait and see what the others think too and good luck with your quest !

2 corrections....

It's AGS 1
and
It's 1.14 not 1.18

Sorry about that....

Thanks for your feedback Nicholas, do you think there'd be an appreciable difference between an AGS 0 and an AGS 1?

Hi, I emailed you some info Legion.

I would have to agree that a larger stone cut poorly can appear smaller than a well cut smaller stone. The cut is the most important factor, and is worth moving down just a little to cut a better cut stone.

How do you mean appreciable? Do you mean as in possibilty of it appreciating in value over time, as in an investment?

Take care,
Graeme

Thanks for the reply Moosejaw. However, I didn't get the email you sent me. Try again here: [email protected]

What I mean by appreciable is....Will someone just by examining it with their naked eye be able to tell the difference between a AGS 1 cut and an AGS 0 cut? And how do the measurements on this diamond hold up?

1. Parameters that you gave before are corresponded to weight 1.18 ct, but not for 1.14.
2. This stone is on border AGS2-AGS3, but NOT AGS1.
3. The cut is not good because of great leakage (see pictures below).

Yikes the ring of death!!

If those stats are in fact accurate then I would pass on this stone. AGS 1, AGS 2 or AGS 3 doesn't mean much when confronted with the hard numbers. The depth on this stone is a little deep when paired with the larger table, giving you a smaller diameter up top than a typical 1.18c stone would have.

I would keep looking though I am sure the price seems attractive to you, you don't want to plunk down $5k for a stone that is leaking light like this one does!!

Andrevyy I just sent you an e-mail about this. Thanks so much for your help. Where did you get the application that lets you do that?

Legion, that is the DiamCalc software from OctoNus..you can download the Gem Advisor (its free) to play with GEM files made from DiamCalc.

However,DC itself is a few hundred dollars (at least?) so it's a pricey playtoy...and usually only used by people in the industry, we get lucky when they use it to show us stones for consumer purposes!

From the pictures modeled in DC vs real Light/Fire/IdealScope images, it is usually pretty accurate in what it sims.

You can tell that I just came back from a long weekend because I'm making idiotic mistakes. As Andreyy pointed out I posted the stats on a 1.18 as opposed to the 1.14. The 1.18 was in fact rated at AGS 2. If anyone who has that software can run the simulation with these stats I would be MOST appreciative. Here they are:

Shape: Round Brilliant

Color: G

Clarity: SI1

Cut: Ideal Cut

Weight: 1.14 ct

Measurements: 6.70-6.78*4.14

Depth: 61.4%

Table Diameter: 60%

Crown Height: 14%

Pavilion Depth: 44%

Issuer: EGL

Descriptions: AGS "1" Cut!!

This one is $4576

Thanks again

I think "Table Diameter: 60% " can not be AGS1.
Am I wrong?

Obviously I'm new to this site because I just now found the Holloway Cut Adviser which I might add is very useful. But I have a couple questions about it:

1. How reliable have you found it to be?

2. How can you use this tool with GIA certs when they don't supply crown height or pavillion depth on the certificates? It seems that EGL are one of the only ones that do.

Legion run an archive search on the HCA and read up on it there.
There are tons of posts that address your same question.

The archive searches will be very helpful to you. If you have a question, there's a good chance it may have been answered already!

Read up on the tutorials on Pricescope (tons of info) and on Rhino's site at www.goodoldgold.com.

You will start to understand more. Then keep looking.

BTW you can't use the HCA without the angles or % of crown and pav. If the cert does not have it, you need to ask for them. If they don't have them, ask them to run a Sarin report. EGL supplies %'s which are not as accurate as angles, and AGS supplies angles. GIA doesn't supply either.

Good luck.

May be this 3D model is closest to real stone.
I changed square deviation to -0,6% in "Advanced" parameters to coordinate total depth and weight.
