Narrowed Down to 2 Asschers -- help me pick!

I would go with whichever has the better ASET.

So put them on hold. And get ASETs. Then post them here for us and we'll help you pick.

Fantastic, I will post the ASET images here when I receive them.

Thanks Gypsy, I will keep that in mind. The 1.52 you listed was actually my 3rd choice. The spread and depth on that one are very appealing, but I just felt like it comes off a little bit duller than the other two.

I agree. And either of them might have a P3, the way they are lying in the videos doesn't show me that. But still... since you get three, I thought I'd post them for your consideration.

Is the "darkness" around the outer table of the 1.58 that I listed something to be wary of? That was my biggest concern.

I'm more worried about the uneven dark facets under the table. I think the windmills are okay on it. Dark windmills happen, but they have to flash and those do.

I received the ASET images and Sarin reports for the Asschers. I would appreciate any thoughts that you have!

In my opinion, the first one is much better than the other two. We will see what Gypsy thinks.

Can you post link to the F?

The 1.58 G ASET seems off. in the video the facets are clearly black (obstruction,) so I don't know why in the ASET they are black (leaking).

The 1.59 G was too tilted in the video to see if it was good or bad, I thought maybe it had potential, but no.

What did the gemologist say?

Here is the 1.51 F link: http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/asscher-cut/1.51-carat-f-color-vs2-clarity-sku-267646

Here is what the gemologist said:

I took the liberty of having one of our graduate gemologists inspect your selections and they found diamond [1.51] to have excellent fire and brilliance. It's brightness is well balanced, and when compared to your other diamonds, this one performs the strongest. As expected, it's completely eye clean and has a true "I" color. [Edit: He got back to me and clarified that he meant true "F" not "I".]

Diamond [1.59] is also very bright and lively, ranking a strong second for light performance. It has a higher/whiter "G" color, an attractive outline, and is also eye clean. Diamond [1.58] is very bright, closely following diamond [1.59] for light performance. It has a white "G" color, face eye clean, and faces the largest of the group.

If you feel you have a keen eye and want the brightest diamond possible, I encourage you to go for diamond [1.51]. However, since all three of them are exceptionally bright, if you are going for the diamond that faces the largest, then diamond [1.58] might be your best option. With this information, I'm sure you'll know which diamond is the best one for you.

Well, probably go with the F, then. The ASET seems to be the best of the three and is the JA gemologist's pick.

yup (but I am not a step cut expert at all).

Well the 1.51 F is his pick just going off of light performance. I'm not sure how to balance the differences in size and light performance between the 1.51 and the 1.58. I also like that the 1.58 is IF, whereas the 1.51 is VS2.

Also, the 1.58 is $1100 cheaper than the 1.51.

Hmm, actually the size difference between the two is probably going to be noticeable.

Ultimately, you have to see it for yourself before you can make any final decision. You need to get it in your hands and play with it for a few days. And of course if you are going to take something home, you should probably have two, for comparison purposes. JA has free shipping both ways, 60 day returns.

So you're saying I should buy both and then return whichever I like less?

Haha I would love that 1.74 F, but $17,000 is a little more than I'd like to spend on just the stone.

I was about to say, that one is a no-brainer if your budget was that high!

I'd go for the 1.51. I wouldn't want higher clarity and lesser cut even if it faces up slightly larger.

Hmmm is the consensus that I should go with the 1.51 F? Is the 1.58's ASET so bad as to make it a no-go? Or alternatively, should I pass on both and hold out for something else?

That's hard.

Can you get both the large one and the F to see which you like best in person. The spread difference is noticable. But the F has a better ASET the gemologist did say it was the brightest stone.

I guess I could buy both and return one, but I was planning on just having JA set it in one of their settings before shipping it.

(That being said, JA's setting selection is a bit limited. Do you guys have any better suggestions for setting vendors? I would go custom, but I'd like to have the ring in hand by the end of May and I don't know that custom is feasible within that time.)

No, just sometimes JA's lighting and the tilt of the stones resting on their pavilions makes the ASETs harder to predict than other lighting and photography set ups.

What type of setting do you want. And if you can swing it I'd see them before setting.

Yes we can help with settings.

I want something very delicate with pave and preferably split shanks. I'm open to a halo, but it has to be delicate and not divert attention away from the placidity of the asscher. I have also considered baguette or trap sidestones, but part of me feels like that look is outdated. Thoughts?

A split shank would be lovely what is your budget. I know of two gorgeous ones. But they will cost around 2-3k.

2k-3k is within budget for the setting. Which split shanks do you have in mind?

Any final thoughts before I pull the trigger? I think I am going to go with the 1.51 and not look back.
