Hi everyone,

BIG QUESTION ABOUT AN ENGAGEMENT RING FOR MY HONEY....

I have been searching for the perfect ring for my princess. I have an opportunity at a local jewelry exchange to buy an authentic used Big brand ring like Harry Winston, Cartier, etc for about 60% of the appraisal price however it is not brand new. I already know my girl loves the ring when we looked at rings in the store. My other option is to pick a diamond and try to figure out what style my girl would love and create one from scratch.

So here is the question. Would you be offended if you received a ring that was not brand new but was spectacular and one of the big name brands? Is this a good idea since buying it used takes away the inflated pricing of the big brand.

It''s really a question of wether the brand name is important to your GF or not. I''d also still want to know how the price of the pre-loved ring compares to non-brand name rings.

Which ring would you pick from the brand name rings? How much is it and what are the stats? Then look and see what you could get else where for the same money and decide if the brand name is worth it.

Personally, if the brand name ring was one I liked alot and was comparible in quality, price and condition to the new ring alternitive, I''d have the brand name one. Being second hand dosn''t bother me.

If it was all polished up why wouldn''t it look new? I would take it IF I didn''t know the previous owner AND it came from a reputable store; ie:not craigslist or ebay or something...

This is a question only your honey can answer. I might feel one way, another poster might feel another way, a third poster might feel a third way, but none of that matters--what matters is how your honey feels.

I think you have to ask her directly or find a sneaky way to find out. Get her sister to have a hypothetical conversation about engagement rings, tell her about a "friend" whose girlfriend got mad when offered a used designer ring, etc.

thanks guys this helps. It is important for it to look new. I have read that platinum can polish up to look same as new.
to give you an idea of the ring it has a 2 carat center aascher E VS2 with about 150 small diamonds around the ring. The shop is a reputable one I think. lol. been around for 60 years. as for price he wants to sell it to me for about $33k whereas a new purchase would cost about $55k. appraisal is for $55k.

If you can get a harry winston ring with this type of discount is it a steal? If I picked the diamonds myself and built a ring I think I could buy the diamond for about 19k. and build the whole ring for about $28k but then I lose big name appeal which not as important as ring itself is something to add to the proposal factor.

biggest problem is that it has an appraisal but not a gemology report. I think you have to remove the stone to get a gemology report.

QUESTION.. is it easy to remove stone from already made ring and get it checked it? where do I send it to get it checked out?

tough decision here.

ASK HER.

Just a question for you. If it is from a big name company are you able to get the proper paper work and/or certificate for it? Buying used without paperwork would concern me. But if it could be authenticated and polished like new it could be a great find. But like everyone has said it really needs be okayed by your lady. People have different opinions about previously-owned jewelry.

My opinion only but it is not like you are buying a coach bag vs. a knock off coach bag.

Name of the ring should not be the concern. More so the certificate, quality, cut etc.

My E ring was custom made so it has no name other than MINE

, and it was mine to begin with

But it''s your call, or her''s really. I don''t think I would want a used Harry Winston or other, as lovely as they are, it still was someone elses failed enagement previously.
