My wife has an old ring that she was given by a family member. She just keeps it in a safe and afraid to wear it because it is valuable and honestly it looks fake it is so big looking. We had an insurance appraisal done on it at a jeweler and it was valued at $18,150 in 2009. We don't know anything about jewelry and do not want to go to a cash for gold type place or a pawn shop. How much could we realistically get out of it? Half? 1/3?

Marquise cut diamond approximately 11.5x6.5x4.7
Approximate Weight 2.20ct Color I Clarity VS1
MOunting/Semi Mount 14k yellow gold two tone tiffany engagement ring mounting

Re: My wife has an older 2.20 carat ring she wants to sell,

I'm sure the experts will further tell you how to proceed, but if it were mine I would first get an appraisal from an independent appraiser in your area [some are listed on this website] so you know the value. There is a thread under "resources" in the above blue tab that tells how to sell your diamond.

You can always try to consign it. Just make sure that you insure it before you part with it. Good Old Gold charges a 15% commission fee but they will help you get top dollar.

Re: My wife has an older 2.20 carat ring she wants to sell,

Hi get it appraised via a registered reliable appraiser or does it have a GIA certificate already? Suggested places to sell it are loupetroop and Diamond Bistro which you can do privately or Jewels by Grace - talk to Grace, Love Affair Diamonds, talk to Erica or GOG as someone has suggested. If you get the proper documentation to describe what it is and take decent pictures of it there is no reason you cannot sell it yourself, if you feel uncomfortable with this send Grace, Erica and the people at Good Old Gold emails and pictures and they should be able to give you a rough idea about how much they would list it for, how much realistically you will get for it and their commissions.

I have a certification of replacement cost and it is is from the owner of a local jeweler. At the bottom it says member independent diamond appraisers association

Your appraisal is dated 2009? I'd get a new one because diamond prices have gone up quite a bit since 2009.

Certified replaceemet is just that . .It is appraisaed in case of loss or stolen that's what insurance company would give you if it is insured.

Large marquis are trying to make a come back so truly they only way your going to get anything out of it is either to sell it privately maybe on consignment at a reputable jewelery store or on line at diamond bistro or ruby lane

Second avenue is to use it as trade in for a piece of jewelry that either or you want.

You are correct if you were to bring it to a gold buyer you'd get 20% of the appraisal even if it was from 2009.

For a stone over 2 carats I agree with other pS.. i would have it sent ti GIA to have it certified . It will cost you about $100-$150. This way you know exactly what you are dealing with and have bargaining power when you sell or trade in.

Otherwise your going to get 20% for a sale

ps mounting means nothing but weight in gold which is up to $1379 for a full gram. today
