He's been looking on his own and I think he's been to all the mall stores. He asked me for help a few weeks ago, I gave him a few options, and I told him to join PS and ask all of you knowledgeable people for help. On the new posts I see I keep wanting to ask, "Is this my son?"

So he phoned me yesterday, desperate for help--apparently he never joined PS. He wants to get engaged on Christmas. I'm not sure this is doable but here goes...

As large as a diamond as he can get--he's thinking something in the 1-1.5 range. He'd love a 2 carat--hey a guy can dream! He seems to be color sensitive, so he's going to need to stay above I??? Clarity doesn't bother him as much as long as it's eye clean--he's got Eagle eyes and notices black inclusions from a mile away. His girlfriend LOVES my OMC. She also likes round diamonds--so I guess cushion or round. She likes halo settings. She also loves yellow diamonds but I know that might be a stretch for his budget which is $7500 for diamond and setting. He's fine with new or pre-owned.

We'd love your help. Hopefully I can get my son to join here, so he can participate in the discussion.

I'm not knowledgable enough (yet) to help re quickly making up the ring , but I do want to say that you will be a fabulous mother in law - helping your son find the right ring & taking an interest in her diamond preferences. Good luck to your son!

Well, his desires aren't realistic with his budget. I think an antique ring might be an option, but I would probably avoid low colors for an engagement ring. The problem is going to be getting a halo ring done by Christmas. It would have to be a stock setting and those often take 1 ct. stones. I am just thinking that a decent halo setting with a 1 ct. modern round brilliant I SI1 is going to cost more than $7500. But if a .90 would work in that kind of setting, it could be possible.

My advice is to call Good Old Gold because they are open today, give them the budget, and see what they can offer. They have tons of settings in stock, and I think that is the best bet. I would not wait until Monday.

I don't think there is time to order a stone from JA and then get it to another jeweler who carries Gabriel and then get a setting made and back to him by Dec. 24. Working with a jeweler who can match a diamond and setting today is going to be the best hope unless you go with a second hand ring.

how about just getting the stone first (since he wants this before Christmas), but it in a temp setting, JA has a lot of great temp setting options, and then let her choose the setting she wants (for an anniversary or something) or even after they're engaged so they can pick it out together?

I missed the halo part.
I think that puts basically all my suggestions well out of reach given the budget, and it's going to be a serious time crunch to get it done well.

Thread jack away--lol---it's a VERY cool avatar! I too love the cool flouro shot! :)

Just popping in real quick-like. I spent 2 hours driving around a mall parking lot looking for a parking space (what recession!??!)---and didn't find one! I just got home, exhausted from fighting traffic and disappointed in the non shopping adventure. I'm going to look at all the suggestions with him. Thank you, thank you everyone! :)

I think he might up his budget to $9500-10K and see if that opens up more options if he doesn't see anything he likes here. Earlier, I sent him a few DBL suggestions that might work. On the lower colors and low clarity he said that it's like buying a Mercedes with a big key scratch down the side of it..so I guess that means no to those, hence upping the budget. ;-) I am thinking he is okay with eye clean Si1's and not okay with K and L colors--maybe not even a J. ;-)

Is there any way to view only the diamonds with actual photos? Maybe I'm over looking something? I thought I'd send him a few options there since there seem to be a lot of diamonds to choose from. Plus it looks like they *might* be able to have it competed by Christmas. ;-)

Yep! I TOLD him to start shopping 6 months ago. He's really not a procrastinator, but his work hours have been crazy lately. He finally has some time off to shop and I'm afraid he might have missed the deadline to get a ring finished and shipped by Christmas. I'm hoping he can find something he likes already completed and would only need sizing. ;-)

Some of the diamonds have pics some dont. If you look at the " reserved ideals" i think they have pics. They ate either AGS0s or gia with under hca 2 ( fron what i have gathered) and have pics vids the report and an ags scintillation report under the pics. The two i posted did

And yeah they have one of those online chat things i would tell them what you want ti get see if its available. Says might youre right buy doesnt hurt to ask

ETA sorry for the typing errors, my 6 month old loves PS too and loves to help me post

That is a great idea--thank you 04Diamond. She went shopping with me when I was looking for settings for my OMC and she said then when she got engaged she wanted a halo. If he can find something already set into a halo, then great, if not I am sure they can set it in a solitaire and do the permanent setting later. :)

Thank you, thank you, Yssie! Color sensitive in that he dislikes color. I do think he'd be okay with GHI. K's are probably too low. I showed him an L with SBF and he didn't like that at all. I told him to buck up and bring forth so more more cash.....lol. Hey that GOG one is a great option! He and his GF met Jonathan when we went to NYC this past summer. :)

DBL said any loose diamond and setting would be late January. :( This one is awesome though: http://www.diamondsbylauren.com/index.php/jewelry/natural-light-yellow-diamonds-by-lauren-antique-style-cushion-r4447 He pretty much said no WXYZ. He'll drop in clarity (eye clean) to get the FLY.

Thank you Enerchi!

I love that 1.36 but he hates the prongs on it. :(

I also love the 1.22 you linked to, but he wants only FLY. Or higher color white--GHI maybe. He did see an GIA E that is doable though.

Poor thing is too picky! That's why I told him to up the budget or lessen his expectations. I did find a few things a DBL though. I thought he would call there today, but he wanted to run the choices by his future MIL and see what she thought. Future MIL and GF and super close and I think he appreciates her input as she would know what she would like or at least point him in the right direction. :)

DBL can fix the prongs.

Honestly, he needs to get a solitaire, then save up and then they can upgrade the setting together.

I agree, but he pretty much said she's flip out if he got her a solitaire as she really doesn't like solitaires. Hmmm...

I'm off to look at that EBay one you linked to.

He keeps coming back to this one: http://jewelsbyericagrace.smugmug.com/Jewelry/Rings-Antique-Vintage/The-Lynda-Engraved-Halo-Bezel/20399168_cFXTdV#!i=1614345685&k=Wbv2k5h It's not in the right setting and I keep telling him he said he doesn't like color--I think he likes the pillowy shape and he agreed. Plus, he can afford more than this.... But it's like three times he's said Mom, what about this and I say, you already showed me that.....lol.

I'm pretty sure he's going to go for a cushion.
