Hi, I recently had my E-ring''s main stone bezel set from a prong setting. They told me it was set in platinum by mistake but did not charge me for it (they said the goldsmith went ahead and did it without asking me, but they didn''t feel it was right to charge me extra).
Well, no less than a few weeks later there is a chip in the side of the bezel head. Does this mean it was not set in platinum? Should I get a second opinion?? I''m so confused, I thought platinum was one of the strongest metals in jewelry. I know I didn''t pay for it, but if it''s not plat why would they lie?

A chip, or a scratch/ding? "Chip" implies that a chunk has planed off cleanly, which sounds ... improbable for just about any metal. A scratch or missing divot of metal, on the other hand, sounds quite possible: platinum is a fantastic substance, but fairly malleable. The good thing here is that it''s also dense enough to retain the metal: a jeweler should be able to polish it back into shape, no problem. And, in no way does this mean that the ring is not platinum (from the sound of it, anyway - a jeweler should be able to test the content as well, or you could post pics here ... we may or may not be able to diagnose, but speaking purely for myself, and loving bezels, it''d be grand to see it).

that is not all a bad thing, a hit hard enough too take a chunk of plat out of the bezel could very well have chipped the diamond had it been in prongs.

While you may not be able to test the metal, it can readily be tested for what metal it actually is. Most places that buy gold scrap could do this for you and many appraisers can do this easily, too. Many people would not even charge you since it only takes a few moments to do. A photo would help us know what sort of damage has ocurred.
