My neighbor's "noise!"

Okay, this takes the cake on weird neighbor noise...I do not know if it's coming below or to the side of me...but one of my neighbors makes the most obnoxious sound around 3-4 AM every sleep cycle.

It's a combination of sighing & what almost sounds like hiccuping. It wakes me up EVERY night and I thought I was going nuts, but finally, I had to tell my husband b/c I am becoming sleep deprived and it turns out my son had woken up at 4 AM last Friday and asked DH what the noise is.

I googled and apparently people can hiccup in their sleep w/out waking up and it seems something like this. The person will make the noise constantly for about 1/2 hr., then stop, then start up again. I've gone so far as to take sleep aids AND put a pillow over my head to block out the noise, but because I have really good hearing, I still can hear it and cannot sleep. So, I'm going to have to sleep with ear plugs in, which I don't really think is safe... :knockout:

Has anyone heard of such a thing or have any other ideas as to what this is?

i have never heard of that....very weird. but what about one of those ambient sound machines?

it must be really loud, huh? i can't imagine hearing a noise my neighbor is making in their bedroom & our house is very close to our neighbors. is he married? can you imagine being in the same room w/him & that noise? hope you have some restful nights soon!

They may have sleep apnea, which is freaky. Basically their hearts stop while their sleeping so they try to catch their breath. Poor thing.

We used to have a neighbor that we lovingly referred to as "Phlegm Girl." She would hock up loogies all night, all day, all afternoon. At first we thought she was an old lady, but when we saw her we discovered she was an early 20's Persian Britney Spears wannabe. I felt bad for her, but when she would have people over, she wouldn't make that sound. Almost like it was just a really bad habit. People even left notes on her windshield to try to get her to see a doctor.

Neighbors suck. :-D

The one below me is a single guy living alone. He has two kids who occasionally come over (maybe just a few times a month)...they're young (under 10). I think I can hear him snoring too so it's like a two noises at the same time and/or the person to the side of us (there is a couple in that apt. They have a kindergartener...may be her.)

Oh, and my husband isn't woken up by it. I think it's my son and me who have good hearing who are kept up.

It's a continuous rythmatic pattern. Constant. One right after another. Then quiet for 1/2 hour, then it starts up again...at first I thought it the couple being "active," but finally came to the conclusion that the sounds are more like hiccups. lol

So creepy!! We always sleep with a fan on, even when it's cold, for the white noise. I probably wouldn't ever be able to sleep without it.

My neighbors upstairs just bought the place not that long ago... well soon enough I started hearing what sounded like "scraping paint off of something".. I seriously thought they might be stripping the wood upstairs. Nope. I hear that sound and bed springs now... geh. And, the weird thing is that we can barely hear them walk upstairs, but we can hear BED SPRINGS? omg can you imagine how loud it is in the room? Their bedroom is right above our spare bedroom/ office so I'll just turn the music up to cover their sex sounds.

Your neighbors might be tip toeing up the stairs out of embarrassment. lol They must know you can hear them....

O wow....ive heard of weird things at night, but never that! My family has a history to talk in our sleep, my mom does it, my sister and i do too. Im not as bad as i was when i was young, i would sing too, but im so sorry. Its not like you can shake your neighbor, like C does me when i start talking. :nono: ...( I think he likes to listen sometime, he says i tend to giggle a lot too)

Sounds like it could be sleep apnea. DH makes all sorts of obnoxious apnea related noises in his sleep, though he went through a sleep test and they told him that a certain amount of apnea moments is totally normal - not all apnea noises mean there's a serious issue. Snoring is also related to apnea, so if he's snoring that could be part of it.

I'm sure it's very annoying it wake up every day at 3am! Would turning on a fan help? Or a white noise machine?

ahhh, apartment living...gotta love it. my one and only experience w/living in an apartment was in college in the late '90's. everyday i'd come home from classes in the afternoon be ready for some soap operas & a nap on the couch & my neighbors kids would get off the bus & put on "Scrubs" by TLC (on repeat) & run up and down the stair case of their townhouse until their mom got home hours later.

a fan is a good idea too. even just have it on in your room pointing away from you. maybe that would drown out the noise of crazy hiccuping dude.

I agree that it sounds like sleep apnea. We also shared a duplex with a man who has it. I sleep through everything, but it was painful for DH. A white noise machine really is a answer.

And, MC, I do have to say, I think you have the worst renting luck of anyone I know (if "renting luck" exists). :wink2:

Thanks everyone for your support. lol!!!

We do have terrible luck with every place! None of them are bad situations, just silly things - like the snoring or jerky people which get to me. Or the stupid $200+ a month water bill! :errrr:

'll look into a white noise machine as we don't have much space for a fan. I did leave a message with my dr. for a stronger RX (one I had a while ago so hopefully he fills it) so I can make it through the holidays. It would be crazy to feel like this over Christmas. What if he won't fill it??? Would benedryl work?

Oh, and I heard the kids that belong to the guy below and so now I wonder if it is one of them since the hiccuping doesn't happen every night.

Yep, the life in an apt. This is the first one I've lived in in over 12 years, so my patience is at a low threashold. We did live in a townhome a few years back, but those were condos and very few were rented and and they were handled by a rental company so the dynamics were entirely different.

My sleeping is weird. Normally I go to bed early (8:30 pm or 9) and I am asleep within 2 minutes. He said 10 minutes after I fell asleep last week the cats started making an enormous racket right outside my door and I didn't wake up. Yet, the same night, I woke up when I heard people talking outside my window at 3 am (my windows faces the front parking lot of the complex which is on a busy street and not behind a gate so after the bars let out people end up congregating there).
