Hello everyone. I have seen a lot of helpful advice here, so I decided I should register and tell you about my problem. Well, not really a problem actually.
My boyfriend proposed a week ago, but decided I should pick out the ring, since it is going to be custom made anyway because I have really small fingers.
Anyway, I''ve been searching for the perfect ring, and it turns out, it''s not in Romania (this is the country I live in). Romanian jewelers only have not so great diamonds at ridiculous prices (just to get an idea - for a SI2 clarity, I color, Good cut - this was all the information they could give me, and about 0,16 carats, the price was almost 1000$), so I decided, after reading some reviews, I will order my diamond from blue nile. They seem to have fair prices, and a lot to chose from.
I settled on this one:
Carat weight: 0.30
Cut: Ideal
Colour: F
Clarity: VS2

Depth %: 59.9%
Table %: 57%
Symmetry: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Girdle: Thin to medium
Culet: None
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 4.41 x 4.37 x 2.63 mm

It''s about 600$ including VAT. I think it''s a good diamond, but of course, that''s just from what i''ve read a bit online, so I want to ask someone with a bit more (to much more) experience about it. Do you think it''s a good price/diamond? Should I settle for something else?
Also, my biggest concern. Since romanians steal like there''s no tomorrow, I can''t really trust the jewler that will put the stone on the setting. From what I understand, the diamond comes engraved by gia. I will not be there when the diamond is set, because it will be done in another city. I know, not very convenient, but they are the only ones that accepted to put my stone on their ring.
Anyway, can they...do anything to switch the diamond or something? Or engrave another diamond with that serial number? I can''t really tell if one diamond is different from another if I can''t compare them side by side.
I would very much apreciate some insights on this problem.
Thank you very much for your time and oppinions.
Have a nice day!

Hi Iepurica and welcome!

Do you have the link to the diamond please so we can see the crucial crown and pavilion angles for this diamond? If the diamond is laser inscribed as it would be if the stone has a GIA Diamond Dossier then that would be very useful if you are concerned, also what about having BN set it? Also as the diamond is SI2 clarity you might be able to spot either with the naked eye or a 10X loupe an inclusion that you can use as a birthmark to identify your diamond. Also request the inscription isn't covered with a prong if possible when you have it set, let the setter know it is inscribed and that you want to be able to read the inscription as you desire.

But if you can post the link so we can look the diamond over for you.

Thank you very much for your answer.
The diamond is VS2, SI2 was the one sold by a local jewler that asked too much for it, I was just giving it as an example.

I don't really know what a Dossier is, but I'm gonna talk to mr. google about it. I thought about a bn setting also...problem is, i didn't fell in love with any of their settings.
Thank you for the sugestion regarding the inscription, I will specify that. Also, I suppose I don't have to give them the gia certificate, or specify the inscription number, right?

Numbers looks good to me.

Dossier is another kind of GIA report, Dossier being the cheaper form, mostly for smaller stones.

Most welcome!

The diamond looks promising by the numbers. The GIA Diamond Dossier is a less expensive to acquire report, it does not feature a plotting diagram like the full GIA report these diamonds are inscribed instead of having the clarity plot, they are
good and valid reports just a different option for the full report. You can get a GIA DD for up to 1.99 carats SC.

I know, I said mostly didn''t I?

Mainly because it is a more expensive form of report and a small stone does not warrant that much more expenditure.

Ok, I wasn''t sure if you meant it was available only for small diamonds and didn''t know if you could get larger ones with the DD.

Thank you very much. So I think this is gonna be it. Now I just have to decide on the setting, which is hard business.
I shouldn''t worry about the diamond being switch or anything without me being able to tell, right? (sorry for pressing on this, but I really want to be sure). I will post pictures with the final form of the ring, when it''s all done :)

If you get a 20X loupe then you should be able to read the inscription, also being SI2 you should be able to note any inclusions you see with the naked eye or magnification in order to be able to identify the diamond yourself. Let the setter know the stone is inscribed and ask them to go through the diamond with you to identify inclusions and write them down and the inscription number, this should act as a deterrent but quite honestly if you are worried about the diamond being swapped and you aren''t sure of the integrity of the setter, I would let Blue Nile set it and be done with it.

Lorelei, it is a VS2.

Agree above, just get a setting with BN and be done with the hassle. If you use the setter, then do what Lorelei states, also tell the setter to set the stone such that the inscription is visible and not covered by the prongs. This is so that when the ring is finish, you will go through the viewing of the stone under the scope again to verify all the inclusion locations and inscription matches with what you have seen and plotted when you gave him the stone.

Thank you! Must have misread where it said SI2 above thinking that was the clarity grade. Iepurica, still possible you could locate inclusions in the stone at VS2 which you could use as another means of indentification, if you could get a 10X loupe that would help. Also it really would be best to let BN set the diamond as you are worried, they do have a good range of settings to choose from. Unless you have an heirloom setting you want to use, this might be the best thing to do.

Hi,

If you''re that worried about the diamond being switched, then as has been suggested, possibly go with a BN setting. They do have a wide selection and you can always pick out a simple setting and then liven it up with a more personalized wedding band.

Congrats on your engagement!

Hello again :)
I finally settled for a setting yesterday (the one on the middle finger in the pic attached - sorry for the fuzzines, it's taken with the phone camera), so I'm thinking of a smaller stone but with better numbers (i think). I'm thinking of buying this one http://ro.bluenile.co.uk/round-diamond-1-carat-or-less-signature-ideal-cut-d-colour-vs2-clarity_LD01441462?__fun_frm=i&filter_id=0, mostly because I don't really want a big stone, but a beautiful one for a certain price.
What do you think?
Thanks again in advance.

Oops, sorry, forgot the attachment.

This one also looks good, but so does the first one you linked. This one has perhaps slightly better numbers but I would be more concerned if the stone was larger - still both could be beautiful - I think you could pick either and be happy. Is the setting from BN?

No, the setting is from a local jewler. I couldn''t pick anything from bn because I wanter white gold, and not really a classic setting (actually, this is sort of a combination between a classic setting and a tension ring), and when it came to narrowing it down, i had only 6 options that fit in my budget, all that looked pretty much the same.
Uh, can''t wait to have it on my finger already! :) Althought it''s gonna be 1-2 more weeks until then.

weird optical symm image on the GCAL report...

But numbers looks good. Good luck. :)
