What feels like a huge "I told you so" (I say this jokingly, given the recent thread of princess cuts) a corner on my princess stone is chipped. I dropped my ring off at my local jeweler today to have it put into a mounting with v-prongs (ironically, to avoid my corners from chipping since I am huge klutz). He examined my ring for a good 5 minutes infront of me with a loupe, and then said that in general, princess cuts can have more frequently chipped corners than other shapes, and would I please initial this waiver stating that I''ve been told that. I don''t know if he saw it under the loupe (the diamond was still mounted) or if this was a general practice for princess cuts.
Anyway, I picked mny ring up 3 hours later in the new setting, and the jeweler said that a corner has a little chip and it was under the prong. He said that he got my diamond secured tightly in the new v-prong setting and that I would need to make sure I always check my stone, that it''s not loose. Since he said it was little, so I wasn''t going to call the insurance company, but did late this afternoon after thinking it over.
I''m worried that a little chip on the corner could lead to a bigger chip or even losing the stone if the same corner (or another corner) breaks. Or am I wrong? My insurance is being great; I just need to get a letter from the jeweler stating the date they discovered it, what could have caused it, and the estimate value to replace it. And then I need to send all of that to them along with a copy of my cert. so they can have their own person draw up an estimate of value for replacement.
I''m kind of surprised that this happened; I stupidly thought my stone would be immune from this because the girdle is thick. I haven''t banged my hand that I recall, but I do wear my e-ring everyday and have kids that I''m really hands on with
(no pun intended
).
Anyway, any advice on what to expect from the insurance company? Should I just cancel the claim since it''s a small chip on the corner?
Thanks so much!
