Hey, all. I know many of you are pet people, and maybe someone will be able to answer my question...

Saturday, I was petting my cat Salem, and I noticed he''s got a little lump, on his side. It feels like it''s between his ribcage and his skin, just under his shoulder, if that makes sense, and it''s squishy. It doesn''t seem to hurt him if I mess with it. He doesn''t flinch or yelp; in fact, he was purring at the time I found it, and didn''t stop purring, even with all the poking around I was doing.
He''s 10 years old, and was given a clean bill of health back in May. I had taken him to the vet b/c he was puking up a storm. He had bloodwork done and everything came back fine. The following week, I found the culprit of the puke - a palm fraun had fallen behind a piece of furniture, and he had been munching on it

.
Back to the lump - it''s squishy, like I said. It feels about the size of a kidney bean, and I know that means it''s actually a lot smaller. I had a cyst in my breast that felt like the size of a superball, but the ultrasound showed it to be 1.5cm. Sorry if TMI.
Anyway, I''ve been reading on the net, and it seems it could be a ton of things, *most* of which are benign - either tumors, or cysts.
I called my vet Sat (they''re open for 3 hours), and he just said to watch it, see if it becomes painful, or larger. Bring him in if I have concerns.

I know the vet bill will be in the hundreds. They''ll have to aspirate from it and do the cytology and all. I''m just a worrywart, especially when it comes to Salem. DH says to wait and watch it, like the vet said. Salem is acting totally normal...

I guess I just don''t know what to do, and I''m wondering if any of you have had similar situations with cats or dogs. Should I wait? Take him in?

Also, in May he had a booster shot, and it may have been given in the same general area as the lump... could they be connected? It seems unlikely to me.

Oh, and the lump is only obviously felt if he is laying on his left side, so his right ribcage is sticking up... I really have to dig to find it if he is sitting on all fours, or like a turkey.

Any advice is much appreciated... sorry if I don''t get back to you til tonight, I worked overnight last night. TIA

If it''s squishy and moves around a bit when you''re touching it, then it''s probably a cyst of some sort. I''d love to tell you not to worry, but as a catmom of 3, I''d have my rear to the vet ASAP. Not really for the kitty (because as I said, it''s probably nothing), but for my own peace of mind.

If Salem seems happy, is eating well, using the litterbox regularly and generally seems ok, I think you can wait a little. But, if you''re going to go nuts (I know I would), then just go get it aspirated and checked. Then you can know for sure and you won''t be trying to grab his lump to check on it every five minutes. You poor thing. You sounds like such a good catparent :-)

Sounds like a lipoma (benign fatty growth); easily detected with an aspirate. :)

I think you need to follow your gut and do whatever feels right. There would be nothing worse, God forbid, than finding out to late that there was something that could have been done--had you given it attention earlier on. However, with that said, vets--of all people--understand how loved pets are, and they understand that a pet does have the tendency to become a valued members of a family...so I would trust your vet 100% to have your and Salem''s best interests at heart.

In the end, it''s all a matter of what you can live with. If it were my dog...we''d be at the vet...I''d need that for my peace of mind.

((hugs)) and healing dust.

Thanks, ladies, for your quick responses. I was reading up on all the drama going on around here lately!

ecf... you just made me feel a lot better. A million thanks!

Cello & italia... Yeah, it''s that "peace of mind" thing. Nevermind all the logic involved - I''m a nurse, and know the chances of the lump being something serious are on the low side, judging by the feel of it. I was an absolute mess when I didn''t know for sure what was in my boob... even though I *knew* deep down it wasn''t serious. These kind of things just absolutely freak me out, and it''s like I MUST know, NOW, KWIM?

I know I''ll end up taking him to the vet. I can''t stand not knowing.

I hope your kitty gets well and that it''s nothing serious.
