I bought these at 3am passing through Bahrain on my way to Dubai in 2004. Gold prices were so low...and there was so much gold...you could buy a gold ingot for 20,000 pounds.
Thanks Enerchi! It's just 'cos I used to work in the travel industry. I did that for 10 years, and although it wasn't the correct fit for me, I see a little of the world. I worked in travel PR specifically, so worked in a PR agency whose clients were all travel companies - airlines, foreign tourist boards, hotel groups, etc. I also did seven months at the Dubai government tourist office. Awful boss. Used to kick me under the table. I earned those bloody earrings!
The wee Russian egg is currently in hair and make-up...
My mother was in St Petersburg Russia this past fall and brought my daughter and I a lovely miniature egg for each of us. (clearly NOT one of the originals!) I should put both of ours in "hair and makeup" and share them when you start your egg thread! We can be twins!
I have 22 carat gold earrings from India. I did not buy them in India but in one of the big US cities with a large Indian population.
I bought them a little later than you bought yours, but gold was not $500 oz yet at that time so they were really very inexpensive.
those days are gone!
I will try to post photos later--unfortunately I mostly keep them in the bank so have to get them out first.
I would love to see them, Jade! These earrings cost a mere 24 British pounds in 2004, and with the US/UK exchange rate being what it was at the time, they were USD 48.00. Since then gold prices have rocketed, as you know. These earrings must be worth a few hundred USD now.
Yes, you're right - those days are gone! For my job, I was doing a lot of travelling 1998-2004, and looking back I can't believe how inexpensive jewellery was compared to now. I mean, it wasn't cheap, of course, but relatively speaking...I got a beautiful half-eternity white gold and diamond ring in Aruba in 2001, baguette-cut diamonds, it was from a respected jeweller and very sparkly. I don't know the specs, and the ring is now lost. But I got that ring for $160.00. I reckon it would cost about $500 now, at least.
Look forward to seeing your earrings! What are they like?
I have three pairs. One pair are large hoops which I don't wear much because they are too heavy. I'm at the age where I worry about dragging my earlobes down. One pair are huggies, that's the pair I'll try to photograph. One pair are studs with freshwater pearls. I had a pair of studs with emeralds in them also, but the emeralds looked terrible with my complexion next to my face so I gave those to a friend. They look great on her!
I do have an emerald pendant and an emerald ring, though. I don't know what quality the emeralds are (I would say, probably not good at all) but they look very pretty in the 22K gold. Unfortunately I don't wear the ring too much either because the gold is so soft the stone has popped out a couple of times already and I don't want to press my luck.
I'll see if I can find the receipts so I can judge the prices.
My friend I went shopping with was always saying how much cheaper the same thing was in India at that time. But they were very cheap compared to any sort of gold in the US at that time and sold according to gram weight; even when they had jewels of some sort in them, it was just weighed and then you bargained.
Thanks! Yes, at the time they were super-cheap - under 25 pounds, so about 40 dollars. Would be so much more now! Can't believe what's happened to gold prices in the last eight years!
