I want my wife and daughters to have the best in the world. My wife has a near flawless 2ct emerald cut diamond ring, and just recent ly I purchased her a Patek Philippe 5905. I would love to buy more but my problem is, almost nothing lives up to expectations, and retail prices sometimes can be outrageous. I need to put here, that I can afford these items easily, so please dont put "well look at a less expensive option", I do understand price vs. value and most oftend I am seeing a very large divergence in the 2. So I am looking for suggestions. I was considering taking courses in Gemology, I do not want a carreer I just want knowlege. I want to be able to pick my own world classs gems out myself. I dont know a better way to get what I am looking for other than to do it myself. Is this my best option? Thanks, and I hope my 1st post offended nobody.

I'm not sure what you're asking.

what I am asking is, since I am not finding exactly what I want jewelry-wise, including price vs. value, I then must do it myself, right? Since I am not a jewelry expert, how best to get up to speed on selecting world class gems, since my expectations are almost never met?

I don't think anyone will be offended and you've probably come to a great starting place.

Start by reading... a lot from this forum. You can't imagine the education I've received here from the tradesmembers and from the prosumers/very educated consumers. The old pricescope posts, which I find highly educational, can be found through a google search: "site: www.pricescope.com and (whatever you're interested in learning)". Of course, you can also take a gemology course - perhaps someone here can refer you to one. You'll also receive more responses in the Rockytalk forum.

Then look at as many diamonds in person as possible to solidify the education you receive here (or formally, in a classroom). Have fun!

When you say "Gems", do you specifically mean coloured stones or are you referring to diamonds?

Definitely use the search tool and read up on everything you're interested in. There are literally thousands of threads to sift through. Learn the C's, look at pics and settings (Show me the ring is a good place to start), look at stones in person--you may realize what you love isn't the "best" in terms of color. For example, I love warm colored Old European Cuts but prefer colorless square cuts. As far as gemstones, their is a wide opinion of what is "best." it depends on what colors you're drawn too. Although one sapphire may have a better report on it in terms of color, you may prefer a lighter or darker tone.

The bottom line is this. Research to your heart's content, take everything into consideration, then once you're knowledgeable--let your eyes be the final judge of quality. I don't think there is a single person here whose entire collection is loved by every other member.

Well, there are personal jewelry shoppers. Buyers that individuals can hire, usually with the proper education and knowledge who will charge you a % fee or a flat fee to do the hunting for you, present you with options then facilitate the transactions. I'm sure if you call Christies, or a similar auction house they might be able to direct you to some reputable ones.

That's what I would suggest you look into. Higher a personal shopper.

What do you mean by "almost nothing lives up to expectations?" You don't like the watches you've bought? If a stone does not live up to expectations, why would you buy it? Maybe you are just looking in the wrong places? Reputable jewelers have good stuff or can certainly help find you exactly what it is you seek. Where have you looked?

Welcome to the forum! This is definitely a good place to start an education. Before taking a class, I'd get a list of the best reference books out there - Richard Wise's Secrets of the Gem Trade might be a good starting point. After? A GIA course isn't a bad thing to do (I enjoyed mine!), but it's pretty strictly geared towards the trade, as opposed to the individual buyer. If you simply want to find the best options for the least money, hang around the forums and see what people suggest .... :rodent:

This would be my suggestion for colored stones as well. And just to note- that is wonderful that you buy your wife beautiful jewelry and we are not offended by any of your comments- though I should warn you 2cts on PS isnt' that big. If you said 5cts I would have been more impressed :naughty: You should check out some of the jewelry in the archieves.
