So I just got word that my Mark Morrell customized Sunburst is done and they are overnighting it to AGA today. I have been working with Chris at AGA and he has been absolutly GREAT! But I am running into a problem. I cutting it close on the proposal and am planning on it for Saturday. AGA will have it on Friday (tomorrow) and can get it out for Saturday Delivery so I will have it. Here is the issue I am facing, it is very difficult for AGA to ship via FedEX so they work with UPS. I want it shipped to a staffed location for pickup so that it does not have to go onto the delivery truck (I have had packages get very delayed with overnight UPS due to the delivery drivers), that way I am assured it will arrive on Saturday. UPS does not have any open locations on Saturday so I have to have it delivered.

Now, I live in a condo building so I don''t sign for the packages, my security guards do, does anyone think this will pose a problem? I am not worried about theft by them but if they are doing their rounds and the UPS guy comes by when they are not at their desk. Does anyone have any experience with a situation like this?

Should I fel safe having the ring delivered via UPS Saturday delivery to my condo building for it to actually arrive? Normally I wouldn''t doubt it but the last two urgent packages I have had sent to me (at other addresses) via UPS got very delayed even though they were overnight.

Thanks for the advice, I will post pics of the ring once I present it to her on Saturday :) It is a stunner.

The UPS insurance will end as soon as the package is signed for so you’ve got a valid concern where there is a certain window of risk between that moment and when you take personal possession. If you’re planning on buying insurance (something I recommend for most people), have Chris email you the appraisal on Friday when he’s done with the work. Forward this digital copy on to your insurance agent and bind the policy effective Friday. This means that while it’s in the possession of your guard it will be covered. Talk to your insurance agent about it and ask specifically how they handle the coverage when an agent is involved (the guard is acting as your agent to receive the package). With most policies I would expect this to be no problem.

Neil, Thanks for the advice, unfortunatly the GF has USAA and so the plan is to insure it under that once I give it to her. Any idea if having it shipped to a UPS Store (which is open on saturday) has the same policy or is it insurred until I sign for it at the store?

I spoke directly with Chris on this for you since Fed-Ex can handle it as you initially wanted. Chris can send it to a Fed-Ex office of your choice for Saturday pick up. Please email [email protected] or call him to give him the address of the Fed-Ex location you wish on the address. Chris was just not aware of the possible arrangement for Fed-Ex delivery. There is a lot going on with AGA, Chris, me and client''s work these days.

Best of luck with the finished product and the appraisal.

Call up UPS. It will depend on what they consider to be ‘delivered’. With 3rd party mail box stores they consider it delivered when they give it to the mailbox place and liability exposure passes from UPS to the mailbox people. Usually the coverage here is nominal or non-existant but it’ll be in the contract for your mailbox. Since UPS owns the UPS store it may be different but you should check with UPS. My guess would be that you are not covered but if you find out, check back here and let us know so we’ll be able to give a better answer to the next person who asks.

I called a UPS Store and they were wishy washy and they said each one is independantly owned so I think I am better off just having it shipped to my condo building. I will just camp outside all morning until the truck comes. I just pray it actually comes on Saturday and is not delayed. I need UPS to be reliable this one time!

why not take Dave up on his offer to send it fed ex?

Dave, thank you for your response, I didn''t see it when I was writing my other one. Chris just contacted me and I sent him the required info. I just want to say that Chris, yourself and AGA have been an absolute joy to work with, thank you so much for helping me out with this!

No problem.

There are several secure and insured shipping methods for jewelers and appraisers to send items of value going to clients in the continental USA.

USPS Express Mail, private insurance covered up to $25000 limit, overnight to two day delivery most of the time.
USPS Registered Mail and USPUSPS Priority Registered Mail, govt' insured to $25,000 and privately insured for the excess up to $75,000 total.
Registered is notoriously slow, but highly secure. Priority postage is supposed to speed it up, but I have my doubts. We can
buy even more coverage for high value packages.
UPS Overnight up to $50K with private insurance. Some zip codes not allowed.
UPS 2nd day up to $10K with private insurance. " " " " "
UPS overnight, 2nd day, 3 day or ground with UPS "insurance" on jewelry, but not unset stones up to $50K
Fed-Ex overnight with private insurance up to $50K. Some zip codes not allowed.
Brinks and other armored car services: a day or more from $50K on up to no limit.

The consumer has fewer choices.

USPS Express Mail to $5K
USPS Registered or Priority Registered up to $25K insured and no limit on the value you must declare. Coverage is limited to $25K,
but you must declare full value no matter what.
UPS on jewelry, but not on unset gemstones, not even in a clip holder, up to $50K. No unset gems can be sent UPS by the public.

That's the game.

I hope you got your shipping situation figured out..
I just wanted to say Congrats and please remember to come back and post some ring pics and hand shots!

Dave, that was a great synopsis of available options!

If I may add (to help people reading this post facing these types of situations) the consumer can also ship by armored truck!

Whatever shipping method you decide on, I hope that the ring gets to you in time for your proposal...how exciting! Good luck!

Just a quick update, the ring made it in on Saturday and I spent the day staring at it and "bonding" with it :) I proposed Saturday night and I am no longer in possesion of the ring...but that is a good thing because it is on her finger and she said yes!

Thank you to both MWM and AGA for helping expedite the shipping process to make my Saturday proposal work. Both companies are truly top of the top and I will be recommending them to everyone I know!

Oh yeah, and the ring looks unbelieveable, I will post the pics a bit later in the "show me your ring" area.
