Mounting size question

In looking for a used mounting, what size difference is acceptable? My diamond is 5mm, does that mean the mounting has to say it's for a 5mm stone? Or is a range of 4-6mm acceptable? Prong set, not bezel. I hope my question makes sense.

It depends a lot of the style of the setting. Some settings will allow only the same size stone, others +/- 0.5mm if the prongs can be slightly opened or closed and third will have a “peg” head and therefore allow for a head swap so you don’t have to be concerned with the size of the original head.

I would try to stick to 4.8-5.2. But as Simone said, it really depends on the setting. And not just the style, but the condition of the setting as well.

You should look on Stuller, too. Any jeweler can order their products, including ones local to you (which might be easier for you than buying something second hand online). If you are looking for basics, some of their settings can be quite reasonable. I know on the colored stone boards the ladies know a lot about reasonable new settings for you to consider.
