Hi Everybody - I have my great grandmother's OEC diamond - approx. .89 ct. (6 mm). Presently, it is set in a yellow gold ring with a white gold six-prong basket a la the classic Tiffany. I really like the mounting, but I have had it repaired several times including a new half shank and replacement of the six prong white gold head. When the white gold head was replaced, I noticed that the stone is not very well seated. It has held the diamond securely without ever loosening, but I would prefer the stone be seated exactly. A jeweler who did not mount the diamond looked at it and said, "Well, it's secure and it's okay - you see, OECs are sometimes hard to seat exactly because they can have wavy girdles." Okay, I can agree OECs do often have wavy or uneven girdles, but shouldn't this be factored into where and how the bench jeweler cuts the seats?
I would like to replace the entire mounting with something a tad more elegant like the Excel Diamonds six prong solitaire, but if I purchase a ready made mounting such as that, who can I have mount the diamond when I didn't purchase the stone from them that won't cut corners? I thought perhaps Singlestone would be able to make a mounting like the classic Tiffany and get it right since they are so familiar with mounting OECs - what do you all think? Do any jewelers that you have all been satisfied with mount diamonds in mountings that they didn't sell?
