Mounting OEC

Hi Everybody - I have my great grandmother's OEC diamond - approx. .89 ct. (6 mm). Presently, it is set in a yellow gold ring with a white gold six-prong basket a la the classic Tiffany. I really like the mounting, but I have had it repaired several times including a new half shank and replacement of the six prong white gold head. When the white gold head was replaced, I noticed that the stone is not very well seated. It has held the diamond securely without ever loosening, but I would prefer the stone be seated exactly. A jeweler who did not mount the diamond looked at it and said, "Well, it's secure and it's okay - you see, OECs are sometimes hard to seat exactly because they can have wavy girdles." Okay, I can agree OECs do often have wavy or uneven girdles, but shouldn't this be factored into where and how the bench jeweler cuts the seats?

I would like to replace the entire mounting with something a tad more elegant like the Excel Diamonds six prong solitaire, but if I purchase a ready made mounting such as that, who can I have mount the diamond when I didn't purchase the stone from them that won't cut corners? I thought perhaps Singlestone would be able to make a mounting like the classic Tiffany and get it right since they are so familiar with mounting OECs - what do you all think? Do any jewelers that you have all been satisfied with mount diamonds in mountings that they didn't sell?

Thank you SparklyOEC - I like the setting you linked to.

Oh goodness, I don't think that is a very good Tiffany replica. Way too squatty! The Vatche is really the best Tiffany replica available today . sna77 had his wife's diamond set originally in the WF Tiffany, was not satisfied and then had it set in the Excel version, and then when the diamond was damaged and had to be replaced, he reset it in the Vatche which he will tell you is the best of the three. I am biased because I also have that setting!

But anyway, when you order a setting like Excel or Vatche, you send the stone to them to set. They make the setting for your stone and they set it. You do not buy the setting and have it sent to you. They would take no responsibility for how it turned out if you did. And one of the first PSer's who did that years ago had problems because she had her local jeweler set her stone.

I'll post a couple of side shots of the Vatche to show you how it is better proportioned than the one linked above, in my opinion.

oo I do like that. I see exactly what you are talking about. I am not a Tiffany replica kinda girl myself so I don't take too much notice to the exact details...

Thanks, diamondseeker2006 - your mounting is extremely elegant and beautiful, and I too, think it is the closest to the Tiffany I have seen. So, if I decide to have my stone mounted in the same Vatche mounting, who do you recommend that I go through? I mean, does Vatche deal with consumers directly, or do you go through a retailer?

Also, on a separate note, I remember your thread about your remount, and I am curious to ask you a question. Do you feel that your diamond looks larger now that you have a six prong mounting instead of four? A while back I went the full custom route and went with six prongs instead of the four I had always had. I was just amazed at the results - I thought I had a new, larger diamond. I think four prongs squares off the stone and makes it appear visually smaller - but just wanted to see if anyone else thought the same thing.

Thanks for your help!
