Does the ammount of light that is allowed to come in below the diamond affect its look. And if so what affect does it have.

Not an expert, but I will tell you that well cut diamonds reflect light that goes in from the top. So a diamond can be set so that the sides and bottom are concealed, and it will not affect the brightness of the stone, assuming it is well cut.

that is certainly true, and honestly most of the time your light sources are above you, so while some light might reflect off the metal and go up the pavilion side its not often you get light coming from the sides and underneath.

However, and I am no expert either, but I would think if light did shine up from the bottom it would probably escape out the top or the sides, so that which did make it out the top would make the diamond seem a bit brighter, but it probably won''t have much affect, or any I would think, under any normal circumstances. you just don''t get that much light shining up on your diamond you know? especially compared to how much is shining down on it.

And by the same token if you encompassed the bottom portion of the diamond in a reflective material then even if the diamond were leaking light the light would just bounce right back up and could get sent back up through the top of the diamond. Which would make for a "brighter" diamond.

but if your just talking about normal settings then the real goal is to focus on the cut of the diamond returning light that is coming through the top, I believe, which will be far more important and pretty much override any of those other factors, I would think.

I haven''t quite put my finger on it, but the performance of my diamond is DEFINITELY *different* than it was prior to being set. I don''t know how much this holds true for a round.... but my stone is much more brilliant and returns light generally better but doesn''t play with color quite as much as it used to. My stone looks much whiter and gives off a much more traditional diamond look than it did prior to being set. It isn''t bad or worse, but I did like the effervescent sort of look that it had when light came through the bottom and sides more than it does now. There''s a mirrored surface under my stone so I haven''t quite figured out how much of a role that plays, but I know it is at least a considerable influence because I see a lot more "mirroring" sorts of things in my stone now where the facets not only pull the metallic color and reflected white light more than say skin tones and wall colors like it used to, but it also uses that for a bit of a hall of mirrors effect. Its cool in its own right - improved scintillation but it is definitely different, less colorful but more sparkly. I should say less reflective color indoors but very colorful and firey in sunlight.
