Hi Pricescope,

New here, so please be kind :)

I'm intending to surprise my mom with a ring this Mother's Day - her wedding/ engagement rings are nice but modest, and our family had been through a bit of a rough patch. I want to give her something sweet but not too grand - something in the range of 0.75 to 0.85c I think. She's born in the 50s, so I had thought of getting a stone with a carat weight matching her birth year, but my budget can stretch to a somewhat more substantial stone, and I don't think anyone will object to having a larger stone over a smaller one.

Just to give you an idea: My mom is in her late 50s, petite, and tends to dress simply. She has quite a good but pale complexion, and apart from a slender band (mixed white/ yellow gold) and necklace (slim yellow gold chain with a smallish stone pendant) doesn't wear much jewelry regularly.

My questions:

1. RB or Oval? I know this comes down to personal preference, but while I don't want the ring to look like an engagement ring, it's hard to go wrong with RB. I get more "bang for my buck" in terms of face-up area with an oval though. Given that this is not an engagement ring, should I plump for a slightly more unusual shape? But I'm afraid the somewhat more eye-catching shape of an oval might be too extravagant for her tastes.

2. White gold, yellow gold or platinum? Platinum is expensive but hypoallergenic - my mom has sensitive skin, though I don't know that she has a definite nickel allergy - and since this is a surprise I foresee the need for resizing, which may be harder for platinum than gold? White gold is a classic option (and my initial choice), but over the last few days I've seen some elegant yellow gold solitaire settings, so I'm now torn.

3. In my search I've found two stones: an ideal cut J VS2 0.8c with SB fluorescence, as well as an ideal J VS2 0.81c (without fluorescence). The price difference between the two (both GIA certified) is about $500. The proportions are similar (including length x width each just exceeding 6mm, which is great).
- I'm getting the jeweller to send me pictures of the SB stone - if any cloudiness shows than it's a definite no-go, but otherwise I'm saving $500, in addition to which the SB fluorescence may impart a whiter (perceived) color to the J stone?
- In case I decide on the SB J stone, would it look better on a yellow or white band (or maybe it doesn't make a difference at all)?

I don't intend to use credit for my purchase, which is why I'm very conscious about the price (and the ring probably goes into a Bottega bag (which I also bought as a surprise) - that took a chunk out of my budget)!

Thanks everyone for reading and I'd really appreciate any comments or ideas!

Can you provide more info on the selected diamonds so that we can better help you?

As for metal color, you should use the color your mum likes. The color of the diamonds you're considering looks good in both yg and wg.

Hi!

Apologies! my bad - here are the respective GIA stats:

Stone A (cheaper):
Carat weight - 0.80
Color grade: J
Clarity Grade: VS1 - Crystal, internal graining
Cut grade: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluorescence: Strong Blue

Table: 58%
Depth: 62.5%
Crown angle: 35.5
Pavilion angle: 41
Cutlet: None
Girdle: Med to slightly Thick (faceted)

Dimensions: 5.88 x 5.92 x 3.69 (not exactly 6mm, sorry!)

Stone B (which is different from my original alternative, but which I'm seriously considering and is $500 more):
Carat weight - 0.81
Color grade: J
Clarity Grade: VS2 - Crystal, cloud
Cut grade: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: None

Table: 59%
Depth: 59.3%
Crown angle: 34
Pavilion angle: 40.6
Cutlet: None
Girdle: Thin to Medium (faceted)

Dimensions: 6.08 x 6.09 x 3.61

Many thanks for your kind advice!

Skip Diamond 1. The cut is quite poor, and it is deep, hence it faces up smaller than it should.
Diamond 2 has to potential to be very nice looking. It is a 60/60 style which some people love but some prefer the smaller table type.

Thanks! I've requested for images as well from the jeweller - I know this isn't the proper way to buy but I'm trying to make Mother's Day. Really appreciate the help!

Ask for idealscope for diamond 2.

Seems I can't get the Idealscope, so I'll have to buy unsighted to have the ring delivered in time.

However, I have one more diamond under consideration:

Stone C
Carat weight: 0.80
Dimensions: 6.02 x 5.98 x 3.67
Cut: Excellent (GIA)
Color: J
Clarity: VS2 - Feather, crystal

Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: Medium Blue

Table: 55%
Depth: 61.1%
Crown angle: 33
Pavilion angle: 40.8
Girdle: Medium to Slightly Thick
Cutlet: None

This diamond scores 0.7 on the HCA tool, with Excellent in all factors apart from the Spread - Very Good.

Stone B (in post above) scores 0.9 on HCA (Excellent in all).

Difference in price is minimal between the two (B and C).

Ideally I would see both diamonds in person, but unfortunately I can't. Based on the numbers (sorry!) and drawing on experience, would you pick Stone B or Stone C in a hypothetical situation? Thanks again for reading and commenting!

Based solely on numbers, I would choose stone #3. However, just know that numbers alone don't tell the whole story. Can you request photos or idealscope images of the stone before you buy?

Thanks MissGotRocks!

B (#2) is from a small jeweller that I can't travel to - am trying to get pics, but at this point an Idealscope seems beyond what they can provide.

C (#3) is a Blue Nile - I know reviews of BN are mixed (at best), but my searches do not turn up similar diamonds matching my specifications and price range on the PS-recommended vendors' sites right now.

The best thing to do would of course be to see the diamonds in person, or wait and buy from GOG/ Whiteflash etc, but Mother's Day is a week away and I'm hoping to come to a decision by today, if possible. Guess I should have started sooner!

Just as an update,

Stone 2 scores 1B on the AGA tool while Stone 3 scores 1A. I'll probably go with 3 - the BN setting is also cheaper than a very similar one that the jeweller offers. Will come back with pictures!

Just as an update to the thread - I went with the third diamond and chose the simplest setting available (it was meant to be a surprise, so the setting may be changed).

Sorry for the quality of the focus - pics were taken with my phone.

It's quite a lively sparkler :).

It looks gorgeous! What a special Mother's Day gift - did she absolutely love it? I bet she did!

We'll need some hand shots - congrats on a job very well done!!

What a lovely gift! Please tell us what your Mom said :)) I'm sure she was very surprised!

Thanks for the kind comments - as well as the help in getting me to choose the right diamond in the first place! She wasn't expecting the ring at all, and said "Wow" in a soft voice... followed by "thank you" - I interrupted her and said "Thank YOU, mom". I think the rest was a little blurry for a while :).

Will definitely post hand shots once I get some - was so engrossed in our special meal that it kind of slipped my mind :).

Wow, it turned out lovely! You are such a sweet child to want something so nice for your Mom (I'm sure she deserves it!)

Yes, yes, please hand shots!! What a beautiful ring and gift!

Thanks again everybody! Apart from the frankly staggering wealth of knowledge to be mined from the PS forums, what has really struck me is the incredibly generous and welcoming atmosphere - and good, hard advice - offered even to absolute newbies like me. I would probably have got an ugly diamond at double the price had I not fortuitously stumbled on PS.

Will get back with some hand shots, asap :)!

As promised here are some hand shots - I got my mom to remove her other rings for these ;) .

Hi there, wow that looks really beautiful and substantial. She has nice hands for rings!

Very pretty - I bet she loves it!

Thanks for the very nice comments! My mom mentioned today she'd noticed a few of her friends sporting updated bands, rings, RHRs etc recently - glad she has something to pique their interest next time!

It is very pretty. I am sure she will love it.
