Hi Pricescope,
New here, so please be kind
I'm intending to surprise my mom with a ring this Mother's Day - her wedding/ engagement rings are nice but modest, and our family had been through a bit of a rough patch. I want to give her something sweet but not too grand - something in the range of 0.75 to 0.85c I think. She's born in the 50s, so I had thought of getting a stone with a carat weight matching her birth year, but my budget can stretch to a somewhat more substantial stone, and I don't think anyone will object to having a larger stone over a smaller one.
Just to give you an idea: My mom is in her late 50s, petite, and tends to dress simply. She has quite a good but pale complexion, and apart from a slender band (mixed white/ yellow gold) and necklace (slim yellow gold chain with a smallish stone pendant) doesn't wear much jewelry regularly.
My questions:
1. RB or Oval? I know this comes down to personal preference, but while I don't want the ring to look like an engagement ring, it's hard to go wrong with RB. I get more "bang for my buck" in terms of face-up area with an oval though. Given that this is not an engagement ring, should I plump for a slightly more unusual shape? But I'm afraid the somewhat more eye-catching shape of an oval might be too extravagant for her tastes.
2. White gold, yellow gold or platinum? Platinum is expensive but hypoallergenic - my mom has sensitive skin, though I don't know that she has a definite nickel allergy - and since this is a surprise I foresee the need for resizing, which may be harder for platinum than gold? White gold is a classic option (and my initial choice), but over the last few days I've seen some elegant yellow gold solitaire settings, so I'm now torn.
3. In my search I've found two stones: an ideal cut J VS2 0.8c with SB fluorescence, as well as an ideal J VS2 0.81c (without fluorescence). The price difference between the two (both GIA certified) is about $500. The proportions are similar (including length x width each just exceeding 6mm, which is great).
- I'm getting the jeweller to send me pictures of the SB stone - if any cloudiness shows than it's a definite no-go, but otherwise I'm saving $500, in addition to which the SB fluorescence may impart a whiter (perceived) color to the J stone?
- In case I decide on the SB J stone, would it look better on a yellow or white band (or maybe it doesn't make a difference at all)?
I don't intend to use credit for my purchase, which is why I'm very conscious about the price (and the ring probably goes into a Bottega bag (which I also bought as a surprise) - that took a chunk out of my budget)!
Thanks everyone for reading and I'd really appreciate any comments or ideas!
