Here''s my next question - I''ve attached a pic of precision set mountings, just as a general example. If I were to want a simple mounting such as this, but with 4 split prongs rather than 4 simple prongs as shown, would I likely be able to:

A) Have the designer / manufacturer do the modification when I order the piece. I''m thinking of mainstream companies like Precision Set or A Jaffe that have mountings I love except for I''d want split prongs. I know that some of these companies will modify existing designs up to a point, but not sure if they likely could/would do this?

or

B) Order the ring as-is, and then take it to a jeweler and have them split the existing prongs or replace the entire head so it has split prongs?

I''ve heard people talk about having the whole head of their ring replaced, but I don''t know details...

I''m hoping that because there are several rings out there that would be perfect if it weren''t for that tiny detail I want, I can avoid having to have one totally custom made just because of this!

Thanks!

(Or, if anyone knows of an existing simple cathedral style ring with pave, channel, or bead set diamonds down the band and 4 split prongs, links/pics would be much appreciated of course!!!)

The prong assembly that holds the diamond itself is what people are calling the head. This was chosen by the designer from a fairly large list of choices and they can vary quite a bit depending on the size and shape of your stone as well as your interest in the number of prongs. Whoever sets the stone is going to have to replace the head with one that is appropriate for your needs anyway unless you just happen to buy exactly the stone that they had guessed at when they made the sample. If you tell them of your desire for split prongs at the time you place your order, they should be able to accomidate you.

Since you are not able to buy diretly from a manufacturer like Presision or Jaffe (both with good products) you are buying from someone who is selling them at a profit. Then you want to spend money altering it to your taste. How about finding a great manufacturing jeweler in your area that will make a ring similar to the one you want but with the changes you want built in the first time. Ofent you will find this way to be no more expensive and have a connection to the maker if a small diamond falls out (not your fault) or the prong gets bent (your fault). Often you can find a jeweler who also buys rings made overseas by the same factories that the big guys use and you can save money. For sure if you want platinum, changing heads is not the best way to approach this style. In white gold, not such a problem, just may not be needed.
