Mixing stone colors in a five stone ring? Yes or No?

Hi everyone,

I have a pair of old stud earrings that I am thinking of turning into a five stone ring. Each diamond is a J/VS2 ideal that is just shy of 1/2 carat each. I am shopping for three more stones now for a total of five. What I am wondering is if it would be okay to get three I colored stones to go with the Js I already have. I initially was just going to do all Js, but I am seeing some I stones that are just $10 to $30 more than J colored ones.

Thanks for your advice!

1-2 color grade difference is fine.

Most preset rings' side stones are in a range too.

are any fluoro?
that can make a huge difference at these colors

When I read the title, I thought you meant actual colored stones -- which could be very pretty.

If you alternated the I / J / I / J / I colors, I think that whatever difference you might see would be minimized.

Also, make sure you match the cutting styles! Mixing H&A's with non-H&A's will look much more obviously different than a slight difference in color.

Thank you all for your kind replies!

I dug out the certificates for the two J colored stones that are earrings now. They are both AGS Ideal with negligible flourescence. The three I colored stones I am considering are GIA EX/EX/EX with no flourescence. What do you think?

Both GIA EX/EX/EX and AGS Ideal could be either H&A or traditional symmetry. When you look at your earrings, do you see dark arrows? If so, how many? I'd look for the same number of arrows in the additional stones to match the cutting style.

I'm pretty color sensitive and I too think you would be safe with I's and J's at this size provided all the stone's are properly graded. You may be able to see a subtle difference, but I don't think it would be glaring. That said, I don't think I'd put H's into the mix. Also, I think I'd put the I's on top and J's on the sides.

As for H & A, antelope I'm not sure I necessarily agree. I have a pair of 1.1cttw earrings. One is a WF ACA and the other is an expert selection that shows nice arrows, but isn't a H & A diamond. There is really no difference to me unless I were to put them under a H & A viewer. The most important thing is that they are cut well. If you did want to match something up, I'd say look for stones with a similar table size, diameter, and maybe even lgf %. This last thing can determine if the "arrows" are fat or skinny, which I think creates a perceivable difference in the personality of the stone, even at this size. But even this is being really picky.

As for the dark arrows, I see where you're going Antelope, but we have to take into account lighting and cut. Sometimes, you may not see them at all, sometimes they will be more silvery, and sometimes dark like you said.

Arrows are not really important as for 5 stones rings, the stones' table are rarely mounted in the same level, orientation, so that all stones display arrows at the same viewing orientation. Usually a slight curvature, so you will see one stone at a time, the rest are orientated away.
