Hey Missy! I read in another thread you take Doctor's Best Magnesium. I want take some for hot flashes, but get overwhelmed with all the choices..which do you take/ like? Thanks in advance!

Thanks Missy! Just ordered.

So question for Missy/Anyone who knows about Magnesium. I take it in liquid form mixed into a small quantity of water. Its nasty tasting and I'd much prefer to take it in pill form. I take mine about half an hour before bed as it really helps with RLS and helping me sleep. Could I take the tablet form instead?

I don't see why you couldn't take it in tablet form instead. The most bioavailable type of magnesium is magnesium glycinate. I take Kal brand. Missy's recommendation of Doctor's Best is also magnesium glycinate.

Thank you! Interesting as I was told the reason for taking it in the liquid form is that its absorbed faster by the body? MP: sounds like you know what you're talking about, so maybe I should try the tablets - they certainly must taste better :knockout:

Hi Minous! I am not an expert but this is what I know.

To utilize the nutrients we take in they must be in a form that the body can use. That is, digestion, absorption and assimilation of a supplement are important to how well it works. Capsules and tablets must dissolve before the ingredients they contain become available.

The body may not be able break down vitamin tablets or capsules into usable material depending on various factors including age, health etc. So one advantage liquids, powders and sprays have is that they don’t require the step of being broken down and the liquid form (in your case) may result in quicker assimilation into the body.

But of course this does not mean that any liquid, spray or powder is better than any tablet or capsule. But a quality liquid, spray or powder may work better and faster. Especially if you fall into one of the categories above because unlike capsules and tablets liquids, sprays and powders don't have to be broken down to be used by the body.

Hope that makes some sense and I realize that doesn't really answer your question. I would say if you want to try the pill form just take it earlier in the day since it will take longer to be absorbed than the liquid form. I tried the powders and liquids too and I just couldn't tolerate the taste. Nothing I did helped (i.e. hiding it in smoothies etc) and it is easy peasy with the pills and I hope that works for you too!

Oh and you probably already realize this but magnesium can interfere with the absorption of other supplements/meds and vice versa so be careful what you are taking it with too. Check out the interaction page on this link. For some reason I cannot link that page specifically.

I haven't really looked into delivery method much because I prefer capsules or tablets for transportability and price purposes. If you don't like the liquid, though, I don't think it would hurt to try capsule or tablet instead if it makes it more tolerable. There are many types of magnesium, some better for different purposes and with varying degrees of absorption. The glycinate form is supposed to be one of the most bioavailable and good for muscle relaxation (RLS). I don't notice any flavor with the KAL brand which I take twice a day.

I can't tolerate any kind of oral magnesium - I always get stomach cramps, but I use this spray and it absorbs through the skin and seems to work well (however I am taking it for muscle stuff): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HZP1P5Q/

Distracts, I am glad you found what works for you. FWIW there are reviews on the Doctor's Best Magnesium of people stating they couldn't tolerate any other oral magnesium either until they tried this brand. However I am not saying it would work for you but just throwing that outn there. Since you are happy with what you are currently doing stick with it. Just sharing for those who might be having this same issue...

Minous, I hope the oral supplement works for you so you don't have to take the less palatable form or perhaps Distract's spray might work well for you. Either way hope you find a better method. FWIW the spray will be easier and more quickly absorbed than the pill form. If you take the pill form just take it earlier in the day to give it time to work. And remember be careful of other drug/supplement interactions with the magnesium.

Siamese, hope it works well for you!

The best way to absorb magnesium is through the skin. Get some Epsom salts and soak your feet in warm Epsom salt water, or add to the bath. Of course the best way is go to the beach and get in the ocean, but that can get expensive

Popping in to ask a question about hot flashes: this past week my head has felt on fire, like I had hot air coming out of my ears. I had chills for the rest of my body and my ear temp was 97.1 at 8 pm. Is that a hot flash (whatever it was it sucked bad)?

I take epsom salt baths....
