Hello
I recently purchased a diamond online. It is certified EGL-USA. I recieved the diamond and the jewelers appraisal but they didn't send the certification. They display the certificate report number on their website and i verified it on EGL-USA's website. The certificate does exist and the stats match the stats they list on there appraisal and reciept. I called up the online store and they told me the certificate gets sent seperatly directly from EGL and i should recieve it in a couple of weeks.
Does that sound right? Shouldnt the jeweler have the certificate? They have a 30 day money back guarantee so i plan on getting it appraised independently anyway but i found this a liitle worrisome. Just curious if anyone has experianced this before.
Thanks for any input

I am going to guess that their vendor has the certificate. It is not unusual for a vendor to send out a diamond on memo but not to send out the certificate until the stone is sold.

Normally once the stone is graded, the diamond and the certificate are returned from the laboratory to the owner of the diamond. So yes, I think it very unusual that you are retailer is telling you that the certificate will come direct from EGL. It may come direct from their vendor, but unless I am wrong about EGL procedures which is very possible, it will not be coming direct from EGL.

That's pretty common and is actually one of the interesting services offered by EGL-USA. They will do a 'pregrade' of the stone for a fairly modest price and allow the client (that's the jeweler, not you) to order a full report on a later date. I think they have a year. This means that they don't have to pay for the report until the stone actually sells, which helps their cash flow, and it eliminates the wear and tear on the paper document that sometimes comes from holding it inventory or shipping it around to potential customers and appraisers. Whether this is a problem for you depends on your situation but it's not a conspiracy. If it's a problem, talk to your jeweler and they may be able to express the process. EGL-USA is a pretty cooperative outfit and they'll do their best to accomodate you if, indeed, they are waiting to issue the report.

Wow. Glad I allowed for the possibility that I could be wrong, which I was. I was totally unaware of this service at EGL.

Thank you Neil for helping me learn a new thing today!
