Would like to know how a diamond can be milky like this one and how GIA will grade the color of a diamond like this?

Is fluor responsible for this color?

I have seen stones like that, that are otherwise clean of inclusions, recieve GIA SI grades as D-Z stones. The milkyness can be from clouds of pin-point inclusions.

There is a higher chance that such stones have fluoro, but it is not a requirement.
I have 2 much more white / opaque stones on my desk that are only medium blue fluoro.

Hello,

Besides the clouds or pinpoints possibility, the milkiness can be caused by whitish graining and/or strong fluoresence. Depending upon the amount of whiteness visible face-up in the Judge II grading environment that the GIA uses for colored diamonds, it is possible that a diamond such as this may get a grade of Fancy White. This is a very rare occurance.

Good luck,

Great clear shot, look at the color in the tip. :appl:

What are the tip Chunky? I'm french and I don't know....

Thank you for your answer Garry!

Tom.... if GIA grade this diamond as fancy white, does that mean this diamond could be desirable or more important value?

Tip has many meanings - in this case it means the two points on the marquise.

A fancy white report will add value. We sold one of my little private collection to somone who sent it to GIA - must find out what GIA called it?

Wow! Do you have pics to share of your fancy white diamond collection? I would like to see it!!!

My understanding is that the market for Fancy White diamonds is pretty immature, so I am unsure what the value may be. But there are many other people on this forum who would have more insight into the colored diamonds market.

BTW it is not for sale.
And sorry the pic is just a quick snap - not as good as the one on this thread.
It is about medium blue fluoro.
probably SI1+ - a few dark inclusions, but the clouds are not visible even onder about 50X.
I have screened out UV with 2 sheets of lexan

I think too!

Thank you for the pic of your marquise Garry!!!!! :appl:

I have nothing constructive to add, but I seriously adore the color of this marquise (both of them actually). I collect opalescent french art deco glass and the color of opalescent glass is really similar to this stone- a milky bluish color that bunches in the thicker portions and just lights up in the sun. I'd wear this in a heartbeat!

And it seems the term is heavily over used as well. This isn't fancy white, it is spit.
