Hi everyone
How much does medium blue fluorescence decrease value of a D color diamond? Or does it matter? Thanks for your input

Usually medium fluoresence in a D color isn''t an issue, but not always.

Determining this require a stone by stone call, requiring someone experienced to judge if there is any visual affect of the fluorescence.

Personally, I dont buy into the flourescence decreasing the value of a stone. Actually, the blue makes it even more beautiful. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As Wink Jones stated that Flourescence was treasured 30-40 years ago, but now it is not.

Now, if for some reason the FLOURESCENCE makes the stone "milky or cloudy" then I see that as a problem that would decrease the value of a diamond.

Just my 2 cents

I agree with WMG. However, most jewellers give a slight discount on stones with blue fluoresence in D coloured stones.

I wish my D had fluor! They may discount the stone a little but I bet it gives the stone even more personality!

The blue fluorescence to me is an extra benifit.

and No MWG does not work for me :)

Hi rubyluvr

There are tons of very interesting threads on Fluoresence, why not do a search by typing in fluoresence in the search box.

That should keep you busy for about a week

Are you guys saying that the Rapaport chart for blue fluorescence discount is completely meaningless? Of course any question about fluorescence here is going to come with an education

but I think there''s still some benefit to understanding trade preferences and averages.

The rap sheet is a sales tool.

If you pay the same amount for a strong blue D-VVS as non, who's been sold?

Elmo, i think what :) is saying that if you are buying a diamond for the sake of it, not for a re-sale/trade, fuoro-discount is "good for you".

Exactly. Take advantage of the trade preference for non-fluorescent stones and save some money since there's usually no negative visual impact. My point is that I'm not sure anyone answered the orignal question, what is a typical discount for D color medium blue, presumably if comparing two otherwise identical stones. Of course there are always exceptions to average.

Rubyluvr, I think folks have posted guidelines previously - discount depends on clarity; Iceman used to have some good info up on his site, not sure it's still there.

Rap Sheet ?

I never use it.

Ice, the discount guidelines you used to have on your site for fluorescence were quite similar to discount guidelines that Rapaport publishes. From your standpoint, your experience dictates what you expect to see. The Rapaport discount guidelines are just someone else's estimate based on experience.
