Would having medium blue on a F-color diamond show poorly? I have read that fluorescence "goes" better with diamonds in the H-I range because it balances out their faint yellow. Would it make a colorless diamond appear to be too blue or foggy (at medium)?

Not necessarily.... you just need to make sure the flourescence doesn''t make the stone cloudy. Usually it is just a very faint blueish hue and looks lovely! There are quite a few ladies on here who have diamonds with flourescence and they look beautiful. Maybe they could direct you to those threads so you can see what it looks like.

You can''t generalize here. Some yes and some no. I have an asscher with strong blue that''s an E, it''s clear as day. My ering see avatar is an E and has medium blue, and is beautiful. Sometimes it can make a stone appear milky or cloudy, but you really have to take it on a stone by stone basis. I actually love it. HTH

I have an F colored diamond with medium blue fluorescence and you would never know from looking at it in normal lighting conditions. Some diamonds with fluorescence can exhibit cloudiness, but I don't think that is typical.

At least on reply said that you have to see it for yourself and you can''t generalize. We''ll, I plan to buy this diamond over the internet sight unseen. So, if it could be cloudy at medium then I''ll just stay away from it because I''d rather not return it later.

Ask the vendor for their opinion.

blue fluorescent strones are really pretty -- but don't buy it to counteract yellow.

buy them for the "cool" factor. especially if you are a science nerd like most of the fluor buyers are.

edited to add: i can't find the "show me fluorescent" thread. aargh.

edited to add: also diamonds with transparency problems are diamonds with transparency problems. fluor doesn't really have anything to do with it. a lot of oft quoted misinformation out there. That said, there is a fluorescent stone in the smithsonian museum that has a transparency problem. looks like someone added a splash of non fat milk.

Fluorescence ( blue med) won't necessarily show poorly in an F - you would really again need to ask the vendor. Strong blue can rarely make a diamond look oily or milky, but to put this into perspective, a vendor and expert here has been selling diamonds for over 30 years, he has only had a handful of diamonds which were strong blue which showed as a negative. Medium should be fine but check. In a colourless diamond, it is a matter of taste. Years ago, colourless with fluoro were called blue whites and were very desirable, like with many things it goes in and out of fashion. Some fluorescence can in many opinions make lower colours face up whiter - I am of the school that believes it does in my experience. I think fluorescence is a positive and adds interest to a diamond, part of the magic of the gem, but it is a matter of preference if you choose a diamond with or without it. If everything else is right with the diamond and the cut, it happens to have fluorescence which isn't a neg, then that is fine - it will be your purchase and up to you if you want one with or without.

My diamond is a D faint flourescent diamond (verging on medium) and yes my diamond does look violet in direct sunlight. Not everyone discusses this, as the cloudiness/oilyness seems to be the big concern, though that is very rare. I like it quite a bit but some people want their diamond to be white, not violet. In reality, this is a very small percentage of the time but it does happen. I like it because it is unique, gorgous (that violet is soo pretty and delicate) and it helps me to know I always have MY diamond.
