Kristall of Smolensk (one of the biggest Russian diamond manufacturer) has presented a new system designed to measure "appeal coefficient" of the diamonds. According to Kristall deputy director Mr. Bocharov it may cause a revolution in the diamond grading system. The system was demonstrated by Victor Baranov, director of the Laboratory of Scientific-Research Institute of Experimental Physics of the Russian Nuclear Center.

Developers of the system have introduced an intergraded factor of subjective perception of a diamond – named "charm". It is determined by measuring the known constituents of a diamond’s brilliance – intensity, dispersion, sparkle, etc. The system mathematically processes large number of the diamond images taken from different angles. It also takes into account standard characteristics of the diamonds (carat weight, color, clarity and cut).

To determine charm, who (or how) will they be determining that exactly?

By the way, if they need volunteers to see all these diamonds and to wear them around in different light, I can have my bags packed and ready to go to Russia in about 7 minutes flat.

Does the system give the diamond extra credit if it's already mounted in a really nice antique/period setting?

I am curious about this, too. Please update. I recently purchased a garnet that I called the Madagascar Charmer - I don't know why but I just found it to be such - and I can't put my finger on it - but that was the word that came immediately to mind... (pics will be on show me the ring next wed). admittedly, part of the charm was it's colour - but since I do not really use the word charming to describe ccolour, there was something else poing on. I will try to articulate it.

BTW - the garnet is cut ideal RB - and it shows!
