Matching clarity and colour.

Hi All

I have just had an email chat with a dealer.

He was offering me some H-Vs2 stones. I asked him why he preferred these stones to H-Si1 or H-Si2 stones. He said that most buyers prefer to match clarity and colour qualities.

My preference is not to have a high clarity stone, unless price is no object, preferring cut, colour and cwt. However, am I in the minority? What do you guys feel about matching clarity and colour quality grades?

My engagement ring is I/VS1. I just wanted the best overall quality without going overboard. It is totally up to you! There are many people here on price scope who have D-H color diamonds with SI1 clarity. Remember it's ultimately how the diamond looks to you. I wouldn't change a thing about my ring! Hope this helps.

I've heard this before... but it makes not much sense at all.

For someone who just find out about those color and clarity grades, it may make sense to apply the same kind of "quality judgement" to both color and clarity, for lack of better knowledge. So, say, if someone wants "average" quality, he may just pick the middle of each scale and so on...

If there is any other logic to such choices, please let me know

You may already be in the minority by knowing more about those grades than their names, for better or for worse.

My eng. ring is G VS2 and i like the combination, but if I was to purchase another stone, i'd be okay with an SI if this meant having a better color, but either way, matching isn't a priority. I'd be happy with a D SI1 or an I VS1 as long as the stone was well cut

Stones that don't fall within the usual ranges... ie D-VVS1, H-VS2, etc. get discounted. So if you're looking for value that's the way to go. If I were you, I would even consider SI1-SI2-I1.

I personally don't ascribe to the typical way of thinking. I, too, have heard jewelers talk about "balancing" the color and clarity....however......


For my money, I want the lowest clarity I can get while still being eyeclean, and the highest color I can get while staying in my budget.

I opted to go for an H, SI2....and THRILLED I did. It let me get a 1.25 stone for a really decent price.

You should find many SI1 options that are eyeclean, and many dealers have great eye-clean SI2 options also.

H vs2 is an ex combo in the middle of the range,make sure to buy an ex cut,go for it.

As a buyer you have the opportunity to choose several facets ("C"'s) about the quality of your stone. Cut, color, etc.

The price of your stone is determined by the qualities that you choose and the size of your stone. By coming down in any of the "C"'s you can increase the size of your stone while keeping the price constant.

I am not sure where this idea of matching color and clarity came from, but for me it is a fairly bogus idea. I think a full conversation about the merits of the different facets of your stone's quality and then letting you decide what is important is much better than me deciding for you that this is what I have, therefor this is what you need.

I think your H SI1 or SI2 is fine.

I think the tutorial does talk about matching colour and clarity, but more refering to not paying a huge premium for a D colour, then getting an S13, or the opposite- paying huge amounts for flawless, and then saving money by buying a J colour.
