Hello, I''m looking for ideas to take a vacation for a couple of days next week along the water and beachyness in either Maryland or Delaware. Any ideas? Recommendations of where to start? General locations that we should check out? Thanks.

chincoteague or assatigue (sp?) islands have some cool draws to them - wild horses. Ocean city is a very touristy spot, but fun.

It''s not much, but hopefully that''ll serve as a starting point.

Also try tripadvisor.com - they have some good suggestions usually.

Thanks it does. We are not looking for touristy/crowds.

If you want to skip toursity, then definitely go for Delaware over Maryland. You might really like Lewes, DE - it''s got a historic small town feel. Plus, you can take the ferry to Cape May, NJ from there, which is a quaint Victorian beach town. Bethany Beach is also nice, though it does have a small boardwalk. Still, you can rent tons of condos or houses that are not in the two block radius of the boardwalk. Even though Rehoboth and Dewey are fun, there is a lot of action, so if you are looking to get away from it all, I would avoid those.

Great, thanks. I actually was looking at Rehoboth thinking it was less action. It is a big help to have names of places, since I''m looking without much context.

Ocean City, MD, Dewey Beach, and Rehobeth Beach are all going to be bigger touristy crowds (high rise hotels, lots of bars, lots of mini golf type places.) Bethany is crowded too, but more homes/small condos instead of high rises - lots of families there.

Lewes is definitely a good choice, love the vibe there. Also if you''re not set on staying super close to the beach, I love Ocean Pines, MD. I''m biased because my family has owned homes there for 15 years, but it''s a great community that is away from the craziness of the beach, but most rental homes there will have a beach club pass which will allow you to drive the 15 minutes into Ocean City, park at their beach club and have restroom access during the day.

I''m happy to offer any more advice I can - let me know if you have specific questions!

Oooh, oooh, I know about this!

We vacation every year at Bethany Beach (Delaware) and we LOVE it there! Beautiful beach, wonderful boardwalk, sweet little downtown... all very fun and family oriented and without the crushing crowds of the larger beach towns.

LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

Thanks steph and lynn for adding in your experiences. I''ve been looking at the lewes, bethany and rehoboth. Trying to factor in the pros and cons of hotels in each area and going rates. The Hotel Rehoboth would have been a sure win, but it does not have our dates available.

Thanks for the links Lynn!

I''m late contributing but we stayed in Bethany Beach last year and it was beautiful! We got a great beach house through Coldwell Banker (cbvacations.com) and they have a local office in Bethany (it was right down the road from the beach house). Also, we were incredibly close to a golf course so Andrew & his dad could go play golf while I slept in and vacationed :)

So, after dilly dallying around for the last 3 days-oh right, that was life- much to my df''s chagrin I did not pick a place!

So...we are headed out today with a list of names and phone numbers and will call as we go to see who has three nights available.

In the running are:

Sea Witch
Atlantic House
Savannah Inn
Delaware Inn
Rehoboth Guest House
Corner Cupboard
Cabana Gardens
Hotel Rehoboth*my favorite, but df wants more of a b&b feel
sea voice
sussex house

If you happen to know anything about one of these choices, we''d be happy to read about it. We''ll be in the car soon, but with internet on the cell.
