Hello, I''m new to this but would like help on a 0.80ct marquise G colour VS2.
I dont know the percentages but it measures 7.6mm x 4.7mm x 3.2mm. I''ve checked marquise'' on this site and believe this one is going to be a bit short compared to its width. Is this a problem or is it just personal pref? Will it sparkle?
Also its in 14ct setting and under 1000 pounds, is this a good price? I think it is but....
Looking forward to replies please.Thanks

hi lynne,

a little short and build-up (or slightly thick model).

can't say about the sparkle. you will have to judge by yourself.

price seems good.

best of luck, robbe

Thanks Robbe for your answer, but I'm still in a dilemma, I have only seen a picture of this ring, although I think it looks nice, its with an online seller but not one of those on this site. I asked for details of the depth etc to feed into the formular "thing" but the reply avoided the information- am I over sensitive or was that suspect!
This is the max. price I can afford, so am I getting what I pay for or is it foolish to go ahead.
The gemappraiser gave what I could put in a ratio of 1.62 and a depth of 68.1 is this a fair measurement for a marquise.
I think I'm getting out of my depth with all this. All I want is a nice ring I will enjoy.

There are a few guidelines for what makes a nice marquise rather well hidden on this site...

You may want to chack this stone's proportions againt the standards devised for this cut (summarized here ) after reading the rules (top of page) and the explanation of what these numbers stand for (a little more than "sparle").

To begin with, the 68% depth is considered way too much by the above mentioned industry standards. This would be quite intuitive: the deeper the stone, the smaller it appears, and in the case of the marquise the available wisedom concules that extra depth does not help the appearence of a marquise cut in any way. This is no premium cut by any means, and by cut quality alone SHOULD be a bargain.

You can use the data you have for the LxW ratio to generate a "profile" of the stone using the "Fancy Cut Selector" on Gemappraisers.com. Ths is no 'thin' marquise, but I would not call th eproportions undesirable. In fact, the shape could help it's light return, although this can only be a very approximate guess.

Needless to say, the "Cut Adviser" only works for rounds, and there is no readily available formula to turn data on the cut proportions of a marquise into a prediction of light return. So there is no way, practically, to know how this particular one would 'sparkle' unless the seller would do some test for you, or you get to see the stone yourself (during a return period, for example), for example.

Does the stone carry a certificate? The prices seems quite attractive - at least for the color and clarity given

Hope this too-long post helps somewhat...

Oh thank you, your reply was really great.
The gemappraiser write up on fancy cuts and the generated shape have helped me a lot-loved the marquise buyer referred to as gregarious and outgoing!!
I am starting to think this will look smaller than average 0.80ct but could still be good for me at price, clarity etc.I quite like the 1.62 ratio shape. The charts seem to show it as a 3A
I checked on cert. but apparently there isn't one, they said something like 'at this price doesn't have one'

Perhaps my next move is to check if they have a return period, as you mentioned, and if so- go for it.
Thanks again great help.

The only way id buy an uncerted diamond is to have it sent to an independant appraiser before I paid a dime.

It is way to easy to get a bad deal.

I am glad I could help, but the above-cited statement sucks: the price is low, but I would rather believe that the stone does not have the pretended grades than that this is bargain. It may be worth considering that, just by reading the "four Cs" basics, most would believe that "G" is the next best to the "colorless" D-F range and SI a good bargain. So G-SI is a good 'presentation' of a 'good diamond' no matter what the stone is. The price would be in line with an I/J-SI1/2, so, if you ARE confortable with kind of stone, this would be acceptable.

Honestly, unless the jeweler was my brother, I would not really disregard being told "this is not cetified - at this price". The argument does not really hold: the stone could be priced considerably higher and still be a 'good buy' at current market prices, so $100 more for a certificate would not represent a dramatic price increase.

None of these comments mean that the diamond looks bad or is 100% a bad deal - just a suspicious one. This stone, could, in fact, sparkle like nuts

and be eye clean, I only doubt it is a G-SI.

Thanks again for the replies.
I'm fluctuating so much on this one I'm getting dizzy, from 'going for it, if there is a returns policy' (as it happens I've been busy working so never got the chance today). I'm now thinking 1000 in my pocket is safer than the risk, and when I can afford more I'll buy a certified marquise from somewhere recommended here and know what I'm getting.

Perhaps retreat to buy another day is my way forward.
Thanks again.
