Hi all,

I found the perfect setting, but it''s a little costly about $5000 just for the setting. I want to know if that''s what it really cost from you knowledgeable folks here at PS or am I being taken for a fool? I''ve called a few places and was quoted that price from one place and the rest never returned my calls. The e-ring I have my eyes on is the Eternity ring from Mark Schneider Design. Thanks guys! Love this forum!

There certainly are settings in that price range. Can you post a link to it or a picture? It would have to be extraordinary for me to pay that much.

I agree w/Diamondseeker! How many carats? We can try and help you find something similar too.

Is this it? 18 channel-set diamonds and 10 pavé-set diamonds, .71ctw

Seems pricey to me too.

Designer settings can be quite expensive

but lovely.

Have you tried going to the Mark Schneider website and checking out the dealer locations in your area and calling all of them for a quote? Here is a link to the website if you have not.

This is the ring you are referring to, right? If so, it has .71 ctw diamonds, therefore, the setting price you''ve been quoted does sound as though it might be a bit spendy for this particular setting ... You may be able to find a lower price somewhere around the $3 - $4,000 range with another vendor. I know that I was quoted anywhere from $4,400 to $2,500 for my designer setting when I was looking. It really varies greatly depending on the vendor and their mark up.

That setting is beautiful! Have you seen it in person and checked out the special "secret" heart? I love that particular addition to Mark Schneider''s rings ... very cute.

Good luck on your search!

Yeah, ditto what Sparkalicious said!

You guys nailed it. The ring suzyQ and Sparkilicious posted is exactly the ring I am looking at. I have yet to find another beauty like it and I'm willing to travel anywhere in the US (factoring in airfare/hotel/car) if the price is reasonably lower than what I have found. :P I was quite dumbfound to hear the cost of 5K as well and I honestly don't think it's worth the 5K for just the setting alone.

Ooooh! Sounds like that''s the one then ... Since you are willing to travel etc ... You should check out the vendors listed in other areas as well as your own area and give them a call too and see how they come in with regards to pricing. If they deal online and are out of state, you may even be able to get your setting at a better price and not have to pay tax to boot!

I say yes, you are being taken for a fool! I found the same (I think!) Mark Schneider setting online for $3195. They only have it on their website in yellow gold, and I don''t know if you were quoted for white gold or platinum, but I imagine that the white gold price would be the same as this one. Here''s the website:

http://www.daysjewelry.org/product/rings/mark+schneider/rsemi2038+mark+schneider+diamond+setting+in+18kt+yellow+gold+%281.00ct+tw%29.do

Plus you could probably haggle a bit since it seems to be an independent jeweler. I love to haggle!

Maybe not though. If he was quoted for platinum and the WG is almost $3K, then $5K for the platinum suddenly doesn''t sound so unreasonable...

That really is a great style. I know what it is like to be blinded by a designer style...nothing else seems to come close as you have memorized every little detail.

BUT but But....if it ends up that your budget can''t find a happy medium...you might try a go at A. Jaffe line...here I really thought it was theirs from the image you posted. Yes, I do see the differences...but if $4 grand is the difference it may make it easier to take a peek you never know.

Oh, when I want to know a good ballpark figure on a setting, I go to the manufacturers website for locations or dealers...and from that list choose 3 from different geographical locations and then take an average on what they say the price is. A higher volume store may be less than a small mom and pop that only order twice a year. So...that could be an explanation of the larger retail price you got? Good luck!

Thank you so much guys. I''m going to keep calling and keep you post once I get the ring.

Good stuff! Looking forward to updates!

My custom plat. setting which is somewhat more complicated to make was less than half that price - including 0.56ct top quality graduated melee (some even have H&A).

It wouldn't be hard to have a design similar to that made - depends whether you are up for unique to you, or want the designer name.

I'd only pay $5k for a Leon.

Yeah, that''s why I said I didn''t know if the OP was quoted for WG or plat. Either way, if $5k for plat. is too much, than $3k for WG is probably a good option to help out the budget!

I''m sorry. The 5K price tag is for the Platinum setting. I am not a brand following person, but I have yet to find a setting like the one I mentioned earlier. I''d love to have the ring custom made for less than 5K (maybe I can get rid of my 20 yrs old TV and get a HD with the money I save), but I don''t think anyone implement the scared heart design on the custom. Let me know if you know of a good custom ring maker. Thanks! :)

Well there are several great custom PS jewelers, but any reputable jeweler is not going to copy a design exactly because of copyright infringement issues. The secret heart thing is the signature of Mark Scheider settings, so I doubt any reputable jewelers can or will replicate that. It''s apparently a tiny diamond with "Love you forever" engraved on it, so I doubt most jewelers could do it at all, regardless of whether they would or not.

Does it have to be platinum? Because if not, you could get the white gold version for $3k. A custom platinum setting will probably run you around that, so in my opinion, you may as well get the real thing, only in white gold, provided you are not deadset on platinum, of course.

Thank you. I was also thinking of using Palladium. Can''t decide! so many metals.

I would get either platinum or 18k white gold.

Did your girlfriend pick out this setting and indicate that it was THE one she wanted? I think you''d be paying a lot for the designer name.

Ditto! There are a lot of great, high quality diamond eternity style settings out there for much, much less, even in platinum.

She indicated that''s the one she wanted because we have yet to find a ring similar to the Eternity style. I''m absolutely sure she wouldn''t mind if it wasn''t a brand name ring either. Do you know of any places where I can find Eternity style settings? Thanks a million.

Well, the diamond eternity style is a generic term to describe settings with diamonds that go all the way around the band. So you can find them at pretty much any jewelry store. I would start with a reputable PS vendor like Pearlmansjewelers.com (tons of brand name settings at great prices).

Also, are you against getting the ring in white gold? That seems like the best solution to me since the exact ring you want is $3k, not $5k, in white gold.

Eternity style settings are all over the place. Would she be okay with a round shank? There are channel set bands available everywhere at half the price, easily..

I think 5K is too much for the setting. Just my opinion. It is straightforward enough to find an eternity style setting for a lesser price.

Just remember it is very hard to size an eternity ring...

True. You can get them where there is a sizing area instead of diamonds all the way around. Few people keep the same ring size over a lifetime.

Take a look at these diamond settings:

http://www.whiteflash.com/Engagement-Rings/Styles/Diamond-Settings/1.htm

Or these (which have already been recommended because many are similar styled to the one above with the euro-shank):

This one looks like channel set euro-shank:
