So does a "semi mount" always have pave/sidestones? I''m looking for more of a solitaire, and all I''m finding are blingy pieces.

Also, for a 5ish mm asscher, can I have it set into a 6mm round four prong? Do I need to get a setting that is specifically for princess/asscher shapes? Would this setting not work for an asscher because the basket is round?

Also I found this lovely little vintage thing, do you think I could have it dipped to make it look like WG, or is that a bad idea?

Thanks!

This site has a lot of solitaire type settings-Diamonds Engagement Rings Diamond Jewelry and News

There are others but I cannot find my bookmarks at the moment. You could also look at Stuller and Adwar. Neither will sell to you, but your jeweler can order the piece you find on the websites. I particulalrly like the Adwar site because it gives the shape, and dimensions of the stones it takes to fill their ring settings.

Thanks,
I''ve looked through the Stuller catalog some. What about the square-peg-round-hole question?
Would a setting like this work?

I can only speak from experience where I''ve made some horrible errors (and then some pretty good choices as well)!

Square pegs into round holes don''t generally go. Especially with an asscher because the cut is normally much deeper than with other gemstones. In any event, asscher or not, I personally wouldn''t put anything but a round (or perhaps an oval) in a round setting.

You also have to think of where the claws will sit. In the two settings you''ve shown, the prongs are North/South/East/West. This won''t protect the edges of the clipped corners and it probably won''t emphasize the asscher cut either.

If you want a simple solitaire setting do a search on the word "cathedral" which may bring up more than you''re getting at the moment and look for a princess or emerald cut setting.

The other thing you have to consider when setting a stone is the actual diameters of the stone itself (and don''t forget depth) and then try to buy a setting that is only 0.20mm out i.e. if your stone is 6.80 it will fit into a 7.00mm setting (generally). Try to always go slightly bigger with your setting but only very slightly. If you go too big, you''ll have a space around the gemstone and may even see the metal of the basketwork underneath. If the setting is too small, you end up with your central stone covering some of the side detailing (if there is any).

If you only want a very simple setting why don''t you contact LOGR or Ian.bo4 (both Ebay sellers) who will custom make for your gemstone? If you''re going for something without diamonds I doubt whether it will cost a lot. I''m pretty sure that they make to order and if you send them a picture of what you want I''m sure they could do it.

Good luck.

Thanks LovingDiamonds, so bigger is better, but not too big. I''d like to have it star/kite/compass set, that''s why I chose those settings in particular, the prongs would go over the cut corners of the stone. I''ll email LOGR (I couldn''t find Ian.bo4) about a simple setting- since everything they offer has pave, I wasn''t sure that they do that. Thanks!
