Do you have these types of folks in Australia? The U.S. has MILLIONS of them.

I feel like this whole covid thing has been going on for years now but i do remember reading at one stage that if you didn't have a mask a bra was an option
Here they told us to wear a spair tee shirt around our necks and if someone started coughing to pull the extra tee shirt up around one's nose and mouth

Most states here don’t actually have ‘mask’ mandates but require a face covering. That is undefined for the most part so sure a bra would qualify, It’s certainly no worse than a tshirt or scarf. And you get two for the price of one!

See this is where it gets interesting!

Hubby and I are actually pro Sweden strategy. As are some of our friends. But everyone is obeying what the government tells us to do regardless of our personal views.

For example there was a 5 visitors limit rule. We were organising a gathering and were one person over the limit. One of the families graciously left a person at home so we could stick to the limit. No one thought of doing anything shady.

I'm not sure what it is in the Australian waters that makes us like this but we generally do as we're told. Perhaps it's just ingrained in us all these years.

@SallyB Might I kindly point out that there are some targeted Trump hating/mocking/belittling/bemoaning/blaming threads already underway. Perhaps some of your posts belong in there instead of other threads that are not solely focused on politics or Trump. Some posters hide the overtly political stuff (when it’s not directly relevant) behind A spoiler tag. There’s a thread somewhere here how to do it.

Locking down an entire state has been tried and that didn't work so well. The crap that happened was on all sides of the political divide here in the states for those who seem to forget.

But then again there's some that make this into political blame game when it shouldn't be.

I think VIC is doing what they need to do, being in enforced quarantine for a couple of weeks with payment thrown in for good measure isn't the end of the world!

I think the Premier (Dan Andrews) is trying to be more targeted this time, rather than locking down the whole state as such? Clearly this second wave escalated quickly right at the point when Oz was reopening and some people chose NOT to adhere to common sense Covid-19 rules so now their community are paying the price. I'm confident we'll get it under control fairly soon. #straya

I feel really sorry for Dan Andrews. He was probably the most cautious out of all the Premiers. I wouldn't wish this on any state but I'm under the impression this is especially upsetting for him.

He's looking so wigged out and stressed!!!

I'm really really really hoping they'll beat this thing!

DH and I have been watching Sweden....wishing we had at least tried a moderate vs all or nothing approach here. People are freaking out at rising cases once things reopen but that was totally predictable without a cure, vaccine or the sudden disappearance of the virus. In our county we are seeing cases now...not an alarming number but a slow and steady rate so far. If we had this all along we’d be in much better shape than months of shut down followed by a few weeks of folly and freedom Only to be shut down again. My own family has been fairly compliant....not 100% especially on the mask manadate when outside but no people around us. It makes little sense to wear a mask in that case. But we have them with us in case we pass someone. Overall our community has done a good job with compliance as well.

I wish I had made the effort to visit Australia pre-COVID. It sounds like a cool country :wavey:

Good points, @1ofakind.
I’m not a big fan of the other side either. Come November I will be holding my nose and voting.

Hehe :evil2:

Hubby and I had a chat about this and came up with a theory. Australia is very much a welfare state. My own parents have lived on welfare most of their lives.

Inorder to get welfare they're used to jumping through government hoops whether it's forms, interviews, meetings, compulsory English classes, skills classes etc. They show up and do as they're told so the payments will keep rolling in.

They used to live in government housing in the early 90s and paid $100 a week for a three bedroom townhouse (it was in a well to do suburb too, part of the government's aim to spread poor people out).

I wonder if we're more obedient as a population because of the inherent "socialist" system that is weaved into society.

Having seen some of the chaos since restrictions started to lift in June in England, I am not confident it would work here myself, especially in larger cities with some people, usually the younger ones, who are adamant that their liberties are more important than Covid-19.

Not too many thank goodness... usually they live behind well-known demographer Bernard Salt's so-called “goat cheese curtain”* where they are totally out of touch with the common Aussie. They are wealthy enough to spend time & effort virtue signalling and just assume everyone completely agrees with them regardless.

*It’s the rich/trendy suburbs where there’s a propensity for goat cheese rather than fast food

I think why its working in Australia and NZ - the people being obedient is also because we went into lockdown relatively early and quite hard and then we saw results
But then we also dont have alot of prolonged history of civil disobedience - we like peace and order

Personally, I believe the mood changed and a lot of people thought "why bother?" after a government advisor close to BJ our PM, clearly broke the lockdown restrictions, yet did not result in any fines and was even backed by the PM and others who hold senior positions in the government!

He gave some really pathetic excuses which made the matter worse.

I thought it was hypocritical myself, and BJ lost a lot of the respect I had for him over this.

Our health minister went mountain biking and a family trip to the beach in breach of lockdown rules in the first week of lock down.
He has only been sacked now after public outcry after he threw the director general of health under the bus by blaming him for something (while he was on the podium with him) for something that was the minister's dept's fault
we have an election in sept - thats why the PM finally sacked him

ill be voting national as usual

@dk168 Couldn't agree with you more. Very much ' do as we say and not what we do'.

It's actually interesting how we just accept it here. This was a conversation I had with hubby:

M: Grocery charges are like double on the credit card but that is because I bought heaps of food this week

H: Good idea babe. Should buy a bit more in case they lock us up. You get spare whipping cream? You love your cream cakes.

Also note they are providing the residents with groceries and medication etc

We're just worried they won't be the groceries we like!

Do they take dietary restrictions into account?

Normally I’d be against mandatory lockdown but under these circumstances I am rethinking everything. Unfortunately people have demonstrated common sense is not common at all. So for their (our) own good perhaps it’s the best solution. For a short time and with the necessary supplies including meds and food etc this might be the best way to control the outbreak and stop it from overtaking entire regions leading to disaster.

As for if this would fly in the states. Nope it wouldn’t and that just might be our demise. :(. Or if people would just wake up and see what’s happening we can behave more intelligently and manage to stop the outbreak ourselves. By staying home when possible and wearing masks and social distancing when one has to go out.

A girl can dream, can’t she?

I would do it if they are really providing groceries and take food allergies into account. I could not stay on Wic even though we really needed it because the amount they offered for vegetables i needed to eat was paltry. I gain weight at the sight of bread and noodles and that type of food was mostly what was covered and they didn't cover the specific formula my kid had to use either. Someone told me I should have stayed on it for the milk but we are lactose intolerant all 3 of us so it seemed stupid to waste a workers time for tickets I wouldn't use so we just didn't go anymore. Im sure that seemed like a tangent but its my experience with government food so... yeah.

For the lockdown bit, we already basically lock ourselves down. I and my daughter legit have not gone over our doorstep except to lean over for mail since March. My husband only goes to work part of the week because they demand he do a portion of work in the office. He works from home the rest of the time. We are lucky to be in this position I know. So for us if it was a mandatory lock down and food and stuff were provided i wouldn't have much of an issue. It would be no different than what I am already doing. I don't know that it would fly here with most people though :( and our government is unlikely to ever ever give us "free money" for rent and food and tell us to all stay home.

My family too! Our liberals are defunding police so there won't be many police officers in front of my house and I will be free to go out and walk my doggie! The number of cases is up, but this high number brings % of deaths from virus closer to 0.00001%. Our liberals only remember Sweden when they talk about successful socialist countries in Europe (Sweden is successful but not a socialist country).

Sooooo apparently in Victoria they've got for the people who run the jails to run the hotel quarantine system.

I had a chuckle at this. No one loves detaining people more than Aussies. I do appreciate everything done to keep us safe though.

Also to those wondering about the food in the housing towers that have been locked down, I don't think they take dietary requirements into consideration. I'm sure you can complain and beg them to give you the right food etc but I saw footage of them loading trollies with generic food. Completely understandable imo. These are drastic times. Might need to eat whatever and get a bit sick as long as you don't die of the virus.

I think we are just a bit more sensible down here
i see people on the news crying because they can't see their families right now
My grandad was away fighting in WW2 and didnt see my grandma or his very young children for 3 years
i mean thank God he came home because so many did not

People need to get a grip and look at the bigger picture

I'm on the Victorian surf coast. We aren't in lockdown yet, but thanks to all the Melburnians thinking they're being really clever by racing down to here the coast to stay prior to their suburbs being locked down...it's only a matter of time before we follow suit. Here we go again!
