Man dies after winning roach-eating contest

I don't feel sorry at all for somebody that D.U.M.B. He should be in the Darwin Hall of Fame. Scares me that people like that can VOTE!

Look, I do't mean to be insensitive, but that guy had to have been one cupcake short of a dozen to have done that. Seriously, WHO DOES SOMETHING THAT STUPID?????? For a Python?

Not even for a weekend with Richard Armitage.......

I find it so interesting that so many think THIS guy is the stupid one. I see people engaging in habitual activities that are far dumber (IMO) than enduring one roach-eating contest:
- Using a cell phone while driving
- Driving recklessly--speeding, combative driving, etc.
- Eating themselves sick
- Smoking cigarettes
- Binge drinking

And then there are the thrill seekers--bungee jumpers, base jumpers, sky divers, etc.

These are all stupid behaviors, and if you die from doing any of them then I think you earned your Darwin Award. These are all things people do far more often than entering roach-eating contests.

Really, though, the cell phone users are the dumbest. If you use a cell phone while driving, I think you're an enormous arsehole who has no problem endangering others just because you want to talk on the phone. I'd much rather live near roach-eating contest entrants than idiots who use cell phones while driving.

+1

The more I think about it the madder I get. :angryfire:
The driver may as well be chugging a can of beer.

I live in California and probably 1 in 4 drivers is holding a cellphone to their ear.
It's illegal but clearly the law has no teeth and police do not enforce it.
They need larger fines, jail terms and revocation of driver license for the FIRST offense.

I want to see cars have an electronic jamming device in them.
If you need to call 911 pull over and turn the car off.

Yes one in a zillion people will be harmed by having to stop and pull over but a zillion lives will be saved.
Better one dies than a zillion.

I am with you Haven. I think it is a tragedy and I feel for his family for what is being said about him on the web. And while it is not accepted in our culture, eating insects in other cultures is widely accepted. It just doesn't sound that crazy to me. Gross, yes, but so does eating hundreds of hot dogs or whatever other eating contests people enter.

I don't think eating live insects is customary -- usually they're cooked in other cultures. Yeah, all those eating contests are nuts, but you can't compare them to crunching on live roaches, shudder. Holy cow, I'm giving myself goosebumps.

You know, you are RIGHT. I am a substance abuser. I shouln't get all high and mighty about someone else's potentially destructive behavior.
PLEASE NOTE; I NEVER, EVER, EVER GET BEHIND THE WHEEL OF A CAR IF I'VE TAKEN SOMETHING. My friends call me America's passenger because I refuse to drive anywhere...

Amber St. Clare--I can't tell if you're being sarcastic. If so, please accept my apology if I offended you with my post. That wasn't my intent.

I couldn't help pointing out what is an interesting irony *to me* in some of the responses to this tragedy. It is so easy to point and laugh at others' misfortunes, and so easy to forget that we are all susceptible to making terrible mistakes. And most of us probably have made at least one or two in our lives. (The habits I pointed out in my last post go beyond mistakes, but I digress.) The difference between this man who died eating roaches and most of us is that we have been very lucky that none of our terrible mistakes led to our demise, nor have they been published for all the world to laugh at.

Haven--I was not offended at all--you merely brought me to the sobering reality that my behavior is potentially as dangerous, if not moreso.

Oh, I'm relieved. I thought maybe I really offended you and that isn't something I want to do.

The way I see it is this: This was an act that was written about publicly and therefore was open for public discussion, which includes opinions of all. The notion that others shouldn't have opinions or commentary on it feels incredibly overreaching to me. Those who feel it's not comment-worthy can support that believe by refraining from comment, and those who feel it's fair game for comment should feel free.

This isn't a contest to see who's behavior is more stupid, so those of you who feel other behaviors are equally stupid are just as free to begin your own commentary threads with instances of behavior that you think are dumb, too.

Wait--so everyone is free to have opinions, as long as the opinion isn't that condemning this man's behavior is mean-spirited or potentially ironic? Interesting.

You seem to be the one telling others that they don't have the right to share their thoughts, or at least that the thoughts belong elsewhere.

I never said others shouldn't have opinions or commentary, I simply stated my reaction to the overwhelmingly condemning responses this story garnered. You seem to dislike that opinion, is that why you're trying to tell me that it isn't welcome here?

I said no such thing.....in fact, I very clearly said just the opposite, which I think is being missed.

Clearly, what some find amusing/ludicrous/comment-worthy doesn't resonate with others. Fine - but why look down at people about what amuses them or is note-worthy to them?

And while everyone's free to have opinions, it doesn't mean everyone will have to agree with them - yours, mine, or anyone else's. :-)

I don't think the man was stupid because he ate roaches and died - I think he was just stupid for eating them. I would not have necessarily thought he would die from it - he didn't either - that's just a sad by product of this stupid competition. It pains me to think that having a python as a prize would warrant anyone doing something as completely unnatural as eating cockroaches.

I think it is sad that he died. I think it is sad that anyone dies from any behavior. There is risk in a multitude of things but then none of us are perfect. I also don't think that smokers, alcoholics or drug addicts have just gotten what they deserve if they die from their behaviors - that thinking is far too narrow minded IMO. Living an exemplary life won't necessarily insure you a long life either. Sometimes there is no rhyme or reason to life - it just is.

Alj, sorry if I misinterpreted, but what you wrote, I read as being sarastic, saying the opposite (taking a jab at Darwin and evolution) and typically the only times I've heard comments like that are from creationists. As creationism is a religious topic, didn't want the trhead to go down that road.

But it sounds like that wasn't what you were referring, so my apologies.

Nope - just the opposite. I *am* a believer in natural selection, so I was noting how truly brilliant Darwin was in seeing something that seems to clearly still manifest all these years later.

I'm really interested in the pathophysiology of this guy's death, just because the experts didn't have an instant answer and the roaches weren't supposed to have any toxins in them.

"Ben Siegel Reptile Store said the prize python, reportedly worth $850, will go to Archbold's estate."

That's nice.
I'm sure his family will cherish it.
