Hey guys! I started researching diamonds a couple of weeks ago and this site has been by far the biggest help to me. I am trying to get the most value out of my budget (around 8,500 for the diamond) and my biggest difficulty I am having right now is the color. The diamonds shape is round and is going into a platinum setting. I know there are a million color threads out there and most people are saying its all preference . I know she would want the diamond to look as clear as possible. Unfortunately I really wanted to get as close to 1.5ct as possible. I guess my question is how low of a color can I go with a diamond between 1.3 - 1.5 ct while keeping the clear look. In comparison her best friend has a g color diamond which I'm sure they will compare. There are some great deals out there with a J color but I am nervous that it will look too yellowish. Sorry for the questions lately don't really have anyone to help me and this site has been my biggest source of information so figured you guys could help me one more time. Thank you so much!

What kind of G does her friend have? Is it a GIA or EGL or IGI or uncerted G? If it's not GIA, you can comfortably go down to GIA I or J color. To me, J shows a tint but not I.

yeah I have been reading that the I is the perfect value without showing any tint of yellow. Thanks so much for the confirmation!

To be honest. Coming from a girl's sharp eyes. Anything with H onwards is quite yellow to me especially when viewed from the pavillion side. With a larger diamond you would expect the yellow to be even more pronounced. As such, I would think 'I' would be too yellow and a safer bet would be around G or H especially if she might compare with her friend.

I was in the same situation as you, I wanted at least a 1.5 ct but my budget was limited. I ended up with a J with very strong blue fluorescence. I could not be happier with my choice. To be honest, it is like a fireball at all times. I can be sitting in the almost dark and see the light hit the arrows just right and it is shining. When you have a well cut diamond, mixed with fluorescence, I think you can get away with a lower color. You can check out my post with different shots from all angles.

"I" color popped in my head after reading your post. It should still look very white/bright from the top (given a well cut stone).
The side view may show a slight tint. What kind of setting are you thinking about?
If you go on youtube and search "diamond color comparison" you will find lots of videos comparing color. I can highly recommend
the GOG videos.

Of course none of us know how color sensitive your GF is. Hopefully she will appreciate the size over the slight color difference.

There are also some crown/pavilion angles that lend themselves more towards bright white light vs color flashes. You could go
that option. 60/60 stones tend to be cut this way with a shallower crown angle where you get the added benefit of a larger look
with the 60% depth (at the cost is losing some fire).

Wow that diamond looks awesome! Thank you so much for your helping guys!
Can i get your opinions on this diamond? It looks a little cloudier than most but when i spoke to someone on jamesallen live chat they told me that they spoke to someone who knew the gemologist and it was confirmed it was just from the picture.and that it would have no negative affect on the diamond. Do you think hes just saying that to get me to buy the diamond?

Also i read on pricescope somewhere that james allen doesnt provide any aset pictures or anything can anyone confirm this? And is it okay to buy without those images? Just nervous spending so much on something that may not be perfect lol
Thanks again for all your help!

JA will provide up to 3 free IS or ASETs but they must be done at the same time and the stones have to be at their location (they sometimes show stones that are not at their location).

At that size, an I colour isn't yellow to my eye but it looks warm at times. I prefer to stay in the G and H range, even for rounds. Whether you detect the warmth or not will depend on the acuity of your eye. Whether you mind it or not will depend on your preference.

You will notice some tint in an I color when looking at it from the side and sometimes when it is tipped.
You will probably not notice tint in an H color.

In the JA video, look at the yellow on the sides of the diamond when it is tipped: this is what you will see when the diamond is in a fair number of common lighting situations. It is not very noticeable when you are looking at it straight on, but you will definitely see it from the side if you look for it in lots of lighting.

Anyone who says you will never see yellow is lying or doesn't know what they're talking about. That is the truth. I didn't read all the replies, but from your response I gather that this was at least implied by one or some.

It's not bad to have some tint of yellow. Just know that the diamond you linked will have a yellow tint in certain lighting. The tint on that diamond is definitely faint, but it's there.

Yup, G-H is the sweet spot.

Here's a video of some beautifully cut diamonds. Comparison between and H color, J color, and a K color.

I believe you can go down to J if your concern is size, with the following caveats:

1) The diamond has to have superideal cut. Branded hearts and arrows, ACA, Crafted by Infinity, Brian Gavin, something like that. Better cut diamonds dazzle the eye so much the diamond's body color isn't a issue.

2) No fluorescence just to avoid possibility of misgrading.

3) Don't stray from GIA or AGS color grading. And mistakes are made sometimes. Get the dealer to confirm that's it's a "high J".

For roughly the same money ($8500 to $9000) Wink at HPD is offering these three Crafted by Infinity diamonds:

1.27 carat J/VS2
1.07 carat H/VS2
0.93 carat F/VS1

I would choose the J every time because the obvious size difference outweighs the sometimes hard to differentiate color difference. The bottom/side view where you can see a lot of tint doesn't matter once the diamond is set in some beautiful platinum.

J's get a bad reputation because of 1) misgrading by alphabet soup gem labs, many J's on the market are actually much lower colored; 2) warmer colored diamond sometimes receive indifferent cutting.

Look at these J's and K's set in platinum. Unbelievable:

This is just a personal preference situation. I can see the tint in I-colored stones easily, and I don't like it, so only H and up for all of my purchases. I wouldn't even consider a J-colored stone.

OP - again, this is VERY personal and no one can tell you the right answer.

I have an I with SBF nd I almost never see color... I would do an I in a heartbeat.
