Love the setting, worried about size/clarity enhancement...

Hi,
I've been perusing rings and found the one below that I love. I haven't seen anything else like it and think the design is perfect.

I'm concerned about the large size of the center stone and the clarity enhancement. Don't misunderstand me, I'm all good with a larger diamond but I don't want it to look costume. I'm trying to stay in the realm of tasteful and my ring size is 5. This ring doesn't appear to be extremely large in the photos but I've looked at many photos and with the different magnifications used it's hard to get a good idea of actual size.

As long as the enhancement doesn't mean that the diamond will eventually crack and you can't see any black inclusions with the naked eye, I think I would be overjoyed with this ring. The seller has a 30 day return policy.

I feel like it may be a too good to be true price compared to other rings I have seen. Is this simply the difference between buying directly from the manufacturer and a retailer? Or, is there reason for concern?

It says it is I1 with the enhancement.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

I don't know if a diamond that is clarity enhanced will hold its value.. GIA doesnt even grade these stones as diamonds but '''Clarity enhanced diamonds'' .

Re: Love the setting, worried about size/clarity enhancement

Look I'm going to be blunt. If you want 2.5 carat center stone for 6,500 you aren't going to find anything better.

That doesn't mean it's a good choice. It's not, and no one here is going to tell you different. But if your ONLY criteria is size. Then I can't think of anywhere other than ebay, and anything other than a clarity enhanced diamond, that will get you that.

Well, maybe some pawn shops. I'd honestly take my chances with a pawn shop. At least then you get to shop in person.

The majority of people on this board, myself included, will not advocate for any clarity enhanced stone. That said, some are better than others. And I would be shocked if that one was one of the better ones.

I honestly feel you would be better off buying a nice 1 carat diamond for 6,000 at a vendor with a good upgrade policy. Putting it in a solitaire for 500. And then upgrading little by little until you get to the size you want. Or upgrading the setting to a nice three stone with sapphire sides with a peg head so you can upgrade the center and keep the setting.

Here's what I would do:
http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3063801.htm

You can get a solitaire for it.

Or you could go for this setting: http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/three-stone/3-stone-trois-brillant-diamond-engagement-ring-1426.htm and put sapphire sides in there (affordably) http://www.simplysapphires.com/blue/ceylon-blue-round-sapphire-3.0mm-.13-cts-ea 68 bucks for a couple sapphires that would look lovely with that center stone.

And all for 300 over the price of the ebay ring.

And with that you get a fabulous upgrade policy on the center stone. So you can upgrade as you want and get to the size you want eventually.

Re: Love the setting, worried about size/clarity enhancement

Eileen, before you spend ANY money at Nathaniel's, try to keep in mind that in diamonds, almost more than anything else, you get what you pay for. Your return on that stone is zilch. If you like that setting, another outfit can replicate it or get it - but you'll take a complete loss on the stone. An I1 has visible inclusions. If you're anything like me, you WILL see them. There is a reason (enhanced + inclusions) this stone is selling so cheap. I wouldn't touch it. If you're thinking about spending some money, perhaps you should spend some time FIRST learning what makes a diamond valuable, and what diminishes its value. The aim, imho, is not only to get something that pleases you now, but that you can trade up later when you can afford to and not take a complete loss on your "investment".

Take a look on eBay at what people are selling used engagement rings and diamonds of lesser quality for, even from outfits like Tiffanys. You will realize that most people haven't done their homework and will likely make a poor decision when it comes to buying a diamond - and never get a fair return on their investment. Pay attention to what Gypsy wrote. The guarantee that you can upgrade perpetually is worth its weight in platinum...

Re: Love the setting, worried about size/clarity enhancement

I agree with Gypsy some girls want size and this stone has that. I personally don't care for clarity enhanced stones I feel like it is cheating and it also means that my stone has been played with maybe with a drill to pull out the black inclusions. Also it has been clarity inhanced to an I1......when grading starts at IF , F , VVS1 VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, Si2 I1 That is very low on the clarity range and its been enhanced. My opinion is similar to Gypsy and others . I would rather have a gorgous 1 carat beautifully cut than a clarity enhanced I1 stone.

Just my opinion

Re: Love the setting, worried about size/clarity enhancement

You mentioned that you didn't want it to look "costume". Unless your friends and family think you have, and are willing to spend 20k plus on a ring, they likely WILL assume it's fake, or some sort of "cheat". I'm not even one to say you have to get a GIA diamond, I don't have any, but for all intents and purposes, many clarity enhanced diamonds are worth nothing. Plus, if the best they could enhance it to is an I1, then it's practically guaranteed to be a fractury mess.

Re: Love the setting, worried about size/clarity enhancement

Sorry but I have to agree with the others. No way would I buy that ring based on the clarity enhancement and the fact that it could only be enhanced to an I1. It must have started as industrial grade. Who knows if the I1 is even accurate. The integrity of the stone must be compromised. Sorry.
Edited to add, that seller has quite a few negative/and "neutral" feedback impugning his descriptions and issues with shipping and communication.

Re: Love the setting, worried about size/clarity enhancement

Thank you all. I love reading your posts and you've been quite helpful. I think I can find a certified stone that is smaller but higher quality and have it set into a similar setting. Truly, thank you for your insight.

Re: Love the setting, worried about size/clarity enhancement

So glad to hear you say that Eileen! My guess is that the ebay ring will be a total train wreck. Not anything most would aspire to own.

Gypsy's advice is sound and solid - buy what you can afford from a reputable vendor with a great trade-in policy. You won't be sorry!

Re: Love the setting, worried about size/clarity enhancement

Just wanted to show you that Simon G makes a setting like that. If you can go to a Simon G dealer with a picture, perhaps they can find out if the ring can be ordered with sapphires. But if not, David Klass would be a good person to make you this setting, and it would probably cost less than a designer setting anyway.
