If diamond is laser inscribed with a report number, and you have a photocopy of a lab report, but have lost the original lab report, is there a way to get another original lab report?

This is a used stone.

I can't see why not, you might have to pay for the reprint or whatever, but they'd have it on file, so it would just be them pulling and reprinting it.

LOL, I am a doofus ;-) I just went to the AGS website and apparently you can request a replacement through a AGS retailer, whatever that is.

A vendor like Summa Jewelers or maybe Wink, probably also GOG. Someone who I believe is one of their accredited shops.

I just called AGS and they WILL replace a lost AGS grading report for a fee but (unlike GIA who will deal with the public) you must go through a jeweler that is a member of AGS.

Do you recall what the fee was?

maybe ask Lesley w/BGD; my diamond studs were AGS and she said there was a fee if I didn't have them. I can't remember how much though so I went and found them.

I am hesitant to ask our friendly PS jewelers since it is not a diamond from one of them 8) But thank you, I will contact her if I don't have any luck another way :))

AGS is a membership organization and it's actually a fairly small group. There's a list of AGS retailers on their website but I think the only members that are regulars here are myself and Summa Jewelers. That said, I think AGSL will sell a duplicate to pretty much ANY jeweler in the world, not just the AGS member firms. Pick your favorite and ask them.

I am definitely curious as to what you are up to :naughty:

Hi Dreamer,

This from Wikipedia;

[The American Gem Society (AGS) is a trade association of retail jewelers, independent appraisers, suppliers, and selective industry members, which was founded in 1934 by Robert M. Shipley, who also founded the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Members are held to a high code of ethics with emphasis on consumer protection and education.

The Society is based in Las Vegas, Nevada, along with the affiliated American Gem Society Laboratories (AGSL) (founded in 1996) and the American Gem Society Advanced Instruments Division (founded in 2004).

The Society trains and certifies jewelers, gemologists, and jewelry appraisers. Diamond grading is the specialty of the American Gem Society Laboratories and the Society has developed its own cut, color, and clarity standards.]

As a retail member (Neil is a ICGA, one of 15 with this title) what I can add is every spring AGS has their annual Conclave, which is when all of the above get together and share information.

This past year the meeting (4 or 5 days) were held in San Francisco with Keynote speakers Daniel H. Pink... who has written many articles on business and technology, Tony Hsieh... CEO of Zappos, Dan Buettner... writer for National Geographic and Jim Abbott... a retired baseball pitcher.
These speakers gave their talks while the members of the society...I am guess numbering around 800...were having breakfast or lunch and were terrific.

The rest of the time (when you are not eating or drinking) you attend different "Sessions" which could be best described as classes that you pick before you go. These speakers can be the top people from AGSL and GIA (GIA gives a LOT of support at conclave) speaking about all the Gem issues that are part of a Retail Jewelers job.... to folks that are invited and have contributed in one way or the other to the betterment of this business.
You are not required to attend conclave but it does make the test they send out late summer a little easier.

PS...American Gem Society is the United States and Canada...so I think you can find a AGS member locally (if need be) for your new report.

Thank you everyone for your help!

Amy I have purchased a small AGSO diamond from ebay and I plan to make a titanium tension set ring for my husband for our fifth anniversary, which is coming up this May! It is a surprise 8) I have not received the diamond yet, it is a 0.355ct I SI1 AGS0, though, according to the seller's photocopied lab report and the laser inscription on the girdle of the stone.

The lab report is from 1999, which may be an issue in getting a copy. I did contact Lesely at BGD because they are good to me there, and she believes that a reprint costs something like $35 plus shipping. BUT the age of the lab report might mean I would need to resubmit the diamond to get a new copy.

I doubt I will resubmit the stone since the whole point of buying it on ebay to begin with was to save money (I paid about 40% off retail), and any additional costs like shipping and grading costs just add to that bottom line, which I have no plans to do. But we'll see what AGS say when she calls them when they reopen after the holiday tomorrow!
