Hello,

I am currently looking for a round/cushion sapphire for an engagement ring. I was wondering if anyone here could recommend a reputable vendor that sells light pink to peach-champagne colored sapphires. Looking for a stone that is around 1 to 2 carats up to about the $2000 price tag(less expensive is better though).

These are two stones that I have seen online that are similar to what I am looking for:

These are darkest I think she would like but a lighter pink would be ok as well.

The setting will be one like this:

If you happen to know of a similar setting with out the SimonG price tag I would love to see it.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, trying to make this the best ring possible for my girlfriend.

I would look at spinels too. They are often that color. Here's my spinel that has that same exact color you're looking for on the right hand side, and they're very durable, untreated and have lovely luster, and that color is well within your budget. I would only go with a sapphire if I was looking for a more color saturated stone, in pink or blue color families. I would not pay $2K for the color you're looking for.

The problem with going too light in pink or peach is that it easily gets into the realm of brown, which will look even browner once set in a cold white metal. Are you sure this is what she wants? Have you both seen such stones in person before?

I know this might sound a bit odd, but have you had an opportunity to see a stone of that color against the skin? Many times people love stones that are pale and warm colored until they see them against their skin tone and then feel that they get lost or disappear. In case this is a non-issue, do you have a sense of the dimensions you seek for the stone given the type of setting you are looking at?

Thanks, for all the recommendations and insight given. I will have to take a look at spinels a bit more.

@Chrono We have not seen the sapphires in person but she did like the look of the artificially colored pink diamonds if only a little light and more towards the peach-champagne color she has see on websites.

@minousbijoux She is more into the setting then stone itself, if that makes any sense. As for the stone size vs setting are you thinking that a sapphire size of 1 to 2 carats would be too big?

Ack, just now seeing this, sorry. No it had nothing to do with the stone vs. the setting - it has to do with the actual dimensions of the stone. Sapphires and other colored stones don't have the same level of consistency re dimensions and cutting that diamonds do, so saying you would like a sapphire from 1 to 2 carats could result in a large dimension range depending upon the depth of the actual sapphires you consider. The range of sapphire carat weights you are considering will likely yield a round somewhere in the 5-8mm range, depending upon the cut. What might be helpful is to consider how a stone of various dimensions, with and without a setting, would look on her finger/hand. Now that said, it is true that proportionality of setting to stone makes a big difference as well, but that's largely personal preference. :)) I hope that helps?

JD,
Do you mind posting a few pictures of the pink diamonds she likes? I'd like to get a better feel of the colour she likes and nothing says it best than pictures. The other thing I'd like to caution is skin tone vs peach champagne gems. Depending on skin tone, a peach champagne looks great on some people whilst it blends completely into the skin for others (and looks invisible once worn). Just something to consider since I don't know her skin tone. I also agree with Minou that it is best to shop by mm measurement since 2 stones of 1 ct could measure very differently due to cut. Are you looking at something around 7 mm?

One more request here for pictures of what your GF has liked.

Another thing to consider regarding the color of the stone is the setting. If you're going to go for a halo or double halo, the stone "blending" into the skin is less of a concern IMO than if you plan on getting it in a solitaire or a three stone with diamond sides.

GemRite (as Chrono pointed out in another thread), has some nice sapphires and spinels in your color range, though I'm not sure if any the right size and shape. Most are too small. At any rate, it's another good site for picking out and showing colors to us.
