Hi, This is my 1st post here. I''m buying an engagement ring soon & was hoping for some guidance. The stone will be a 1-1.25C emerald cut & I''ve narrowed it down to two stones. Both look great & the larger diamond is only $75 more. My question is, should I sacrifice some color/clarity and go with the larger diamond?

Carat Color Clarity Polish Sym
1 F VS1 VG VG
1.25 H VS2 GD VG

Depth, table, ration & girdle are all in good shape. Both are GIA cert.

Thanks!

all things being equal otherwise, I''d go for the bigger one, I''m pretty sure.

if they are both good looking stones, go for the bigger one provided that...

a) the VS2 is eye clean (which isn''t always the case in ECs)

b) the tables and depths are both > 68%ish and the crown % is where it should be

and

c) the vendor selling then and/or you thinks that they both look great IN PERSON. ECs are impossible to judge based on numbers alone...so even if the numbers are there, one or both stones might have serious issues visually. Go for the better looking stone.

but if all else is equal, go for the bigger stone. did you note what the mm difference will be? for ECs that is a much better judge of how big the stone will be opposed to carat weight.

mimzy: good call on the mm difference. The larger diamond only has a 5 1/2% larger surface area than the smaller diamond. I originally misread the depth: its 71 for the large diamond. I compared pics of each side by side & option #1 is a much whiter & better cut diamond. I''ll opt for quality over quantity. Thanks!

good choice! glad i could help
