I am new here. We are looking for an "update" ring for my wife. I''ve been lurking here for the last two weeks and have tried to read as much as I can. Coming in, I though this would be a chore but I have to admit I''ve found the subject fascinating. Some of these discussions on light return, angles, tools such as HCA resonates well with my engineering training (In short: makes sense why it sparkles!)

We narrow down our first "candidate" this week and would like to get some feedback.

---
Report Type: GIA Diamond Grading Report
Round Brilliant
Measurements: 8.06 - 8.09 x 5.03 mm
Cut Grade: Excellent

Proportions:
Depth: 62.3 %
Table: 55 %
Crown Angle: 34°
Crown Height: 15.5 %
Pavilion Angle: 41°
Pavilion Depth: 43 %
Star length: 55 %
Lower Half: 75 %

Girdle: Medium to Slightly Thick, Faceted

Culet: None

Finish:
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: None
---

HCA: 1.4

Thanks in advance.

Welcome Mott!!!! Sounds good. What is the clarity on the stone?

[Somehow the cut-and-paste did not work the first time]. Here is the rest of the missing spec:

Carat Weight: 2.01
Color Grade: E
Clarity Grade: VVS1

I realize some will find the Color and Clarity grade "excessive" but that is what the wife "wants". Her current ring is E/VS1 and she was very clear about "I am not moving backward"

. We are asian and there are some level of cultural bias on color and clarity in play here.

Best,

Welcome Mott!

With the info given, this diamond looks very promising! Have you seen the stone and do you have an Idealscope image you could see or post for us? This would just help to confirm the numbers.

Hi Mott!

This looks like a fantastic choice! Since the HCA scores under 2 and all the specs seem to be in order, the diamond sounds as though it will perform well. I''m sure it is beautiful!

If you have not had a chance, I would ask the jeweler to see it under an idealscope so that you can see the hearts & arrows pattern for yourself. I figure you might enjoy this since you state you can appreciate the "engineering" side of diamond cutting.

I hope this one is your winner! Please let us know what you decide.

Spark, we don't know if this is a H&A diamond, so in this case perhaps the IS would be more useful to check for light return or possible leakage.

Thanks Lorelei! I know ... I was just hoping or keeping my fingers crossed for Mott as I figure, in addition to the essentials you mentioned, it might be fun or interesting, at the very least, to see the pattern, if present, himself.

Didn''t mean to mislead you, Mott & thanks for clarifying for me Lorelei!

You are welcome Sparks and you are doing a great job BTW and must have done a lot of studying in the time you have been here!

I just wanted to mention that the light return or leakage if using an IS might be possibly more important to the other poster in this case, to judge this diamond.

Thanks Skippy123, Sparkalicious, Lorelei for your input.

This one actually is from Costco''s "special order". We went to see the ring last Friday and we like it. I did bring an ideal scope and to my "untrained" eyes the IS image looks good. I forgot to bring my camera so no picture. We plan to do a second trip to see the ring this Tues. I will make sure to take the picture then.

Despite living in Silicon Valley and I am working in high tech, my wife still is not that comfortable on buying diamond via the internet. So we are settling for Costco for now.

Best,

You''re welcome.
Good stuff! I hope it is everything you and your wife want it to be. I''m sure it will be beautiful!

I see that the image came way "way too big" so I will skip the last picture which is a more close up. No 3 of 3.

We pulled the trigger just in time for Christmas. Pictures of the ring.

Nicely done mott!! Please post hand pics when you can!!

ASET image using a hand-held scope.

I''ve found that is was not that easy to take pictures using the hand-held idealscope and ASET scope. My hand is not that steady and the camera auto focus is having a hard time getting a clear image.

Best,

Congratulations, I love it!
