Hi guys,

My friends are ready to get engaged, and are looking for an oval (eventually to end up in a plain-shanked halo). The ideal stone would be 6mm x9 mm if not slightly bigger. Color under an H or so would probably be too low. I don't want to be too picky about clarity grades; the important thing is that there are no black spots under the table that are visible to the naked eye.

I've been helping but am frankly at the end of my rope. Ovals are too hard. Bow ties, bad light performance, showing color... I give up! Anyone have any advice? I've looked at every James Allen oval in our size range that's been listed in the past month, all the GOG stones, all the secondary market sites I know of (Dover, JBEG, Oakgem, Betteridge) and nothing has met the requirements.

Budget for the stone is under $8k. Any ideas?

Call Jonathan at GOG and let him find them one. He picks great ovals!

Do you think he can do it in budget? I haven't reached out to him because I perceive his prices to be higher than other vendors.

I would call Brian at BGD. You've worked with them before, have a relationship with them and he can source whatever you want. He's out of town this week though, but if there's no rush I'm sure he can find you a great oval. H or better, eyeclean and 6x9 ish.

I think that when you give a vendor repeat business you receive the benefit of establishing a relationship and being able to talk to them plainly "I'm at my wit's end, help me!"
