Hi all, just looking for abit of advice on a ring i was left by my grandmother. I was left what i was told was her engagement ring, although this ring is quite bigger than her wedding ring, and there are afew things i need to be clarified before i see if its worth getting appraised. 1. The diamonds seem to have abit of darkness in the middle of them, the diamonds themself do sparkle, dont know if that means they are damaged. 2. The band seems to be missing some gold here and there, possibly gold plated? 3. Also the inside on the band it seems to be of a rough surface. Im wondering if there is anyone who can help me with ring please??
Is it worth getting appraised, is it a diamond ring or dressing up ring. I cant see any markings on the ring and probably worth a note, my grandfather and great grandfather both worked in the antiques business so the ring itself may be older than my grandmothers time of engagement which would have been around 1950's/60's. Also my grandfather was in the Royal Navy and has been based abroad, so may have come from another country. 20170426_144929.jpg 20170426_144922.jpg 20170426_144744.jpg 20170426_144612.jpg 20170426_144550.jpg 20170426_144457.jpg 20170426_144929.jpg 20170426_144922.jpg 20170426_144744.jpg 20170426_144612.jpg 20170426_144550.jpg 20170426_144457.jpg
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just a few random thoughts. First, The overall style of the rain is not inconsistent with a ring of the 50s or 60s, so it's possible that this was new when it was given to your grandmother. Second, I don't think the ring was gold plated. If it's plated, you would be seeing base metal at the bottom of the shank where the ring is showing signs of wear. It's more likely that the ring was repaired at some point, and the off colored metal you're seeing is solder that was plated over, and that has worn off. Hopefully one of the diamond experts will weigh in on the extinction that you're seeing in the diamonds.

Enjoy wearing your heirloom!

It does look plated (and corroded) to me, and two of the stones look too worn to be diamonds.

Are you sure these are diamonds? Is it possible these are paste? Paste stones are traditionally leaded glass or sometimes rock crystal. Black dot paste is when a black dot is painted on the culet area of the stone to give it an appearance of a diamond. Paste jewellery was very popular at one time and was sometimes set into silver and gold settings. Have a look at this thread and see if your stones look similar.
