Live in Texas, have diamond sent to Louisiana = no sales tax

Is this the common method most buyers from online vendors use?

Texas has 8.25% sales tax which would be a LARGE number when talking about thousands of dollars. Apparently, you can have it shipped to a Louisiana FedEx store and avoid the sales tax there....

I'm assuming most buyers do this?

Uh, no, I've never done that.

It's not ethical, IMO.

What address are you going to have the vendor send your package to? If you know someone in another state your vendor can sell it them and ship it there. But you can't just use the FedEx's address.

I would be careful there gypsy. Technically, every person is supposed to report all online purchases in which they do not pay a sales tax (amazon for instance)----and then the state will collect its due tax. So, unless you report each and every online purchase in which you paid no sales tax---then you would be in the same boat as the OP?

Or maybe you do this, in which case, carry on!

I do report my purchases. Not the 2 dollar ornaments from ebay. But anything large, yes. I have reported my jewelry purchases from online vendors, I just bought nightstands from ebay and plan to report those, and so... actually this is one thing I am pretty good about. And most stores I do online shopping at for any significant amount (which is pretty much Nordstroms) has a CA presence so ... I pay the sales tax upfront.

Since I buy so few things out of state, it's actually pretty easy for me. And, I do not go out of my way to buy or send things out of state for the sole purpose of cheating the tax authories. And I live in CA, so the sales tax is significant.

But thanks for taking me to task! I sure have learned my lesson now!

LOL---Just saying that ethics can be somewhat tricky---but definitely NOT trying to teach any lessons. There's no way a little shard of graphite such as myself would pick a fight with a super ideal stone!!

And great job on reporting all of your purchases. Now, if you could just get CA to actually spend your money wisely---all would be well.

Enjoy the holiday season.

Ignoring the ethics question, it's illegal, or at least it's illegal if you don't follow it up with proper reporting and paying to your LOCAL taxing authorities. If you've got a local sales tax, you can bet they have a corresponding tax that applies to exactly this situation. Check the website for the Texas department of revenue for instructions on how you're supposed to do it. It varies somewhat from state to state but they usually have the rules fairly prominently posted because there is so much confusion over this issue. One solution to the problem is to consider moving to Alaska where most cities have no sales or use tax.

Haha, I like this solution :)

..."moving to Alaska"   I liked that one!

Or New Hampshire, Delaware, Montana, or Oregon.

All have no state sales tax, and are a bit more local than Alaska.

That said, I don't know of any diamond retailer that will ship to a FedEx drop site. I imagine their insurers would have their heads for that kind of thing.

BGD ships to FedEx for 'hold for pickup'

Yes they do. And I love that. No waiting for on the whims of a delivery guy.

Optics. No worries. I get cranky sometimes. LOL at the graphite.

They ship to FedEx for pick-up but the address of the purchaser is NOT the FedEx office.

I knew I forgot to post something. This is true. It ships to my address but with a hold for pickup at the Feb Ex office.
