They can be stars, humanitarians, scientists, anything.

Again, this is a subjective list I'm asking for, not a debate or argument.

You list does not need to be in any particular order.

My entry:

1. Diana, Princess of Wales
2. Elizabeth Taylor
3. Madonna

I'n not sure about my favorite...there could easily be 3 from each genre of famous life...so, I'll mention three actressess:

Audrey Hepburn
Marilyn Monroe
Angelina Jolie

3 is pretty limited for favorites. There are so many different areas for which to have a favorite.

Let's see...

JK Rowling, author of Harry Potter. She really made something of herself. I love her writing and I think it encouraged an entire generation to read. Reading is a passion for me so anyone who can bring sheep to that fold is amazing.

Helen Keller, obviously an amazing woman. Author, activist, speaker, key member of ACLU.

Jane Goodall, I'm just amazed by all of her accomplishments.

Mae West, Annie Oakley, Laura Ingalls Wilder were all in the running too.

If you all want to make lists with more than 3 please feel free. I just wanted to find a framework for the thread but it doesn't have to be a rigid one.

Mother Theresa for her selfless humanitarianism

Eleanor Roosevelt for her commitment to gender and racial equality

Rosa Parks for her bravery

Hilary Clinton
Oprah
Lady Gaga

Honorable mentions:

Betsy Johnson
Rosie O'Donnel
Kathy Griffin
Jackie Kennedy
Cher
Rosa Parks
Princess Diana
Susan B. Anthony

"Momma" Carol Smith, none of you know her, and she'll probably never see this, but she is one of my favorite women in my modern history. This woman isn't related to me, but her family took me in and cared for me during a rough time in my life and I want to give her the recognition here.

Margaret Thatcher
Marie Curie

Michelle Rhee
Michelle Obama
Ellen DeGeneres

Geez, I have so many! The ones in bold are my top three.

Duchess of Windsor
Princess Grace
Princess Diane
Jacqueline Kennedy
Eleanor Roosevelt
Hillary Clinton
Madeleine Albright
Elizabeth Cady Stanton
Susan B. Anthony
Dorothea Dix
Amelia Earhart
Marie Curie
Helen Keller
Rosa Parks
Mae West
Bette Davis
Meryl Streep
Maria Callas
Dorothea Lange
Diane Arbus

Martha Stewart
Oprah
Michelle Rhee

Bette Davis

I have to say I'm a little torn. Elizabeth Taylor is my favorite actress. But Bette Davis would have to be my second favorite. I watched her in Of Human Bondage and I couldn't believe it. A genius. I'll put her on my list.

Dolly Parton-she knows who she is, isn't ashamed of it, remains humble despite her success, and does so many awesome charitable things, not to mention what she has done for her TN community
J.K. Rowling-without Harry Potter, my life would have no meaning ;))
Roseanne (the character on the show, not necessarily the real life version)-without whom, I could have never made it through nursing school.

Sarah Palin - nobody has ever been character assasinated so much and still heals their head up high

Ann coulter - says it like it is

Dr. Ruth- made "getting your freak on" socially acceptable

Hey, I know I don't know you well enough but I am having a hard time telling if you are making a serious list or a list in jest. Not being judgmental at all. If you are serious great, if In jest, great. Just trying to figure out. Thanks

1. My mom
2. Ayn Rand
3. Sylvia Plath (even though she left her kids without a mom)

Maria Montessori and Dorothea Dix

This is a very serious list. They are/were strong, brave and influential people, not just women.

Nadia Comaneci, the best gymnast who ever lived.

Yes, and with my greatest respect to everyone, just a reminder, this thread, again, is about subjective lists. We should probably avoid questioning others as to their intentions. Thank you for your kind understanding.

Emily Dickinson, my favorite poet. How could I have forgotten her?! :cheeky:

Ok, from the 19th century until today.

Sacajawea, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Billie Holiday, and Hilary Rodham Clinton just to name a few.

Billie Holiday

A genius.

I'll add another genius to my list, Ella Fitzgerald.

Christiane Amanpour (CNN)
Sarah Palin
Meryl Streep
Dolly Madison
Michelle Obama
Dolly Parton
Lady Gaga
Clementine Churchill (Mrs. Winston Churchill)
Edith Wharton (author)
Rosa Parks

This took me all day to come up with (because I am picky)

Bella Abzug

Mother Theresa

Rosa Parks

Susan B Anthony

After I finally picked them, I think what ties them all together is that their work benefitted other people more than themselves. Pretty rare, especially these days!
