LG Studs - Size difference

Hey, So I am moving on with my next project which are some simple everyday studs. I was originally going to go with 0.3 carat for each stud (so 0.6 total) but now i'm thinking of maybe going 0.4 or 0.5 each stud, Do you think there will be much difference in the size between these three carats sizes? I'm thinking there probably will be between a 0.3 & 0.5 but maybe not so much between the 0.3 & 0.4 or the 0.4 & 0.5, so not sure its worth the extra cost! (its not that much but every cent counts to the next project ha ha)

Anyone have any pics they can share or advice on the size difference? Also any advice on setting? I want something low profile, 4 claw maybe??

I think there's a reason why JA has their lab studs sized .25 tcw, .5 tcw, 1 tcw and 2 tcw. They are the most obvious size differences. I don't think you'll notice the .1ct difference in any of the sizes in studs. Maybe as a ring, but not in your ears.

I do not have the stats on smaller sizes - but this is why we stock in 0.25ct, 0.30ct, 0.50ct, 0.70ct etc. It is just too hard to make a pair of 0.45ct each. They all get pushed to 0.50ct (lousy cuts)

In that they'd rather cut a 'fair' .5ct stone over an ideal cut .45? Surely the loss of .05 in weight is worth it? Aren't the small stones basically remnants of a rough that got the biggest stones already cut out from them. Your world is so interesting @Garry H (Cut Nut)!

50 point G VS2 is worth 1.48 times more per carat than 45 point GVS2 on the Rap sheet.
Add to that 10% heavier diamond.
If you owned a cutting factory and a big bank debt, which would you produce Moni?

I have purchased 4 pairs of studs:
0.5 tcw 4-prong JA
0.85 tcw 8-prong BGD
1.0 tcw (currently in 3-stone ring)
1.66 tcw 6-prong scallop JA

All 4 pairs are ideal cuts (JA and BGD), I gave the 2 smaller pairs to my daughter, and frankly, when she wears them side by side in her double piercings, they look about the same size. These 2 sets are about the range you're considering right?

The 0.5 tcw is F/G color, and the 0.85 tcw pair is J color. I don't know if it is due to the whiteness of the 0.5tcw, or the 4-prong setting but it just looks just as big as the 0.85tcw J color set in ab 8-prong setting, which actually sits lower. I will try to get pictures on her ear when she gets home.

Having tried on several different prong styles I think my preference is my current 6 prong scallop setting, it doesn't sit too high and it doesn't sink too low into my ears like a martini setting.

Here are a couple pictures comparing the 0.5 tcw studs next to 1.0 tcw (stud turned side stone).

Hey, thanks for the info. If you could get pics that would be super. I think I’m going to go with .4’s (so .8 tcw) jeweller is looking at stones but said they should be in the 4.75mm range so I don’t think it’s worth the extra money to go up to a .5 (1ctw). I don’t think I will see a size difference.

if you could I’d love to see the 6 prong scallop setting you have. I’ve been looking at 4 prongs so would love to compare. This is what I am currently looking at or similar setting. I like that these are open on the side but look quiet low profile.

The 4 prong setting looks great, I don’t think it will sit too high. In fact it looks swoopy like my 6-prong shown here 3A280A34-806D-4430-84FD-5BB90A734C3A.jpeg

The 4-prongs settings that stick out far from the ears are the standard basket settings, that is why for higher carat weights, I would go with more swoopy 4 prongs setting like the one you have. This is the standard 4-prong basket setting pic:

Yes exactly. I prefer the way the diamond seems to set further into the swoopy ones so in my mind they will sit closer to the ear, whereas I feel the basket setting would sit higher.

would you mind taking a pic of you 6 prong front on so I can see what the 6 prong is like V’s 4 prong.

thanks you so much for the help.

Here you go, sorry for crappy pictures, I have an iPhone 8...outdated and Shaky hands, so I’m sure my pictures are blurry.

Oh it's a no-brainer at that size range, especially as only a discerning eye could tell if one stone is an OK .5ct and the other a high performance cut .45 at same clarity :| In retrospect I should have got a better cut .9 stone than an OK 1ct but the weight is a might incentive for consumers too for sure!

I think by the time you set a .4 with 4-prongs it'll beef up the overall look anyway.

From what I’ve read, you won’t really see a difference in stone size unless you go up around 25% or more. Example 1 ct would need to go to 1.25 to see a difference in stone size. If you went up say 15% it’s so small of an increase you wouldn’t notice it.
