Leverbacks/tilting forwards..

I'd love some fun, blingy gemstone solitaire lever-backs. I'm thinking about light brown/champagne colored topaz, maybe rose cut amethysts. Sort of like this, but with a shorter 'dangle' and a larger stone http://www.etsy.com/listing/47930182/faceted-labradorite-bezel-earrings..

Maybe around 8-9mm in size, with a thin bezel. But, most of the larger leverbacks that I've tried on tilt unattractively forward and don't sit well.

Are there any lever-back design concepts that would alleviate this problem?

Should I use a discreet plastic earring back to hold it in place? (though I don't like this idea much..seems like it could be awkward if the backing slipped and became visible)

Is there a size/weight threshold that causes the tilt?

Have I posted this thread before? I feel sort of de-ja-vu as I'm writing this..thanks in advance!

Indy!

I am sorry to thread-jack as I don't have a suggestion for your earring dilemma, but I posted in SMTB looking for you! I was hoping you could share your ID studs with us...Do you have them? The last I heard was that Yekutiel was picking them out for you.

Now that I know what a leverback is.... I think those small rubbery earring backs help with leverbacks tilting, but I still get that problem with mine. I think a shorter "dangle" helps, too. I always feel like longer ones hang stiffly. Does that make any sense? I love my leverbacks (small rose gold swirls with hanging white gold hearts and teeny-tiny diamonds) but they never move as nicely as I wish they would.

Think your idea, if you can get them to hang right, sounds great! Do you think the thickness of the wire could play into it, too?

Hello there! :wavey: I just completed a leverback project and am here to help! Do you mean leverbacks as in the types of dangle earrings with spring loaded lever style backs or the plain wire dangles like the image you posted? Leverback dangles don't usually tilt forward as much.

The other ones you posted are shepherd hook earrings (I love the look!) and for my finer jewelry items with these settings - I do use a small clear plastic back shaped like a little nut/bolt. They are silicone and you can get them from any jeweler or online. They not only hold the earring straight up where you want them, they will also keep them from falling out. These types of earrings are so pretty but also fall out more easily. Can't wait to see your final product!

Here is the picture that Luann from ID Jewelry sent me. The studs are gorgeous and I am so happy with them! The diamonds are super sparkly, and the basket setting is substantial as well with a very secure catch. They're half carat total weight, and are about an H/I and SI if I recall correctly. I'm actually considering their half carat cluster 'flower' studs now, or for a pair of jackets for the studs, for a slightly bigger/interesting look. How did the BGD huggies work out? Sometimes I still think about them!

Interesting idea. Maybe the thickness of the wire does have something to do with it, and definitely the length of wire too. Are your earrings heavy? Do even light earrings tilt too?

OH!

This http://www.jtv.com/Two-Pair%2C-Approx-33mm%2C-Sterling-Silver-Diamond-Cut-Leverback-Earring-Wire/1065313,default,pd.html is a leverback.

I posted a shepherd hook. Aha!

Which do you prefer? I think the shepherd hook gives a longer, wider sort of movement, while the leverback probably moves much more but in a smaller range. For a large stone, do you think one would be better over the other?

Oh, I just realised I didn't answer your questions.

The BGD huggies went back...They just didn't do anything on my ears, they are very delicate. Cute, but almost more suitable to someone really young (not that I am very old!), but they would be perfect for my 12 year old niece. Does that make sense? I prefer studs anyway, and really want a pair in .50tcw. I like the look of ID jewelry's bezels, as you say the baskets are substantial. I tried others that are more expensive, and was surprised how easy it is to lose them.

Anyway, I am rambling now. I would be grateful for as much info/pics of your gorgeous pair, so that I can make an informed decision :))

I think you should get the jackets, they would look amaaaazing!

Actually, my earrings are really light, and I kind of think thats the problem. They seem to get stuck in one position and I feel like if they swung more they wouldn't always tilt back. But the wire might also be bent or something, or my holes might be tilted. That sounds weird.
