Let's play a game... rainbow gems.

That is the most brilliant aqua I've ever seen! From Nigeria, correct? Who cut it? Gorgeous!!

Yes. This is cut by Jeff White. Good lighting and a good round brilliant cut certainly helps! I think most experienced lapidaries can cut aqua that’s just as brilliant. I have another round brilliant aqua cut by Lisa Esler that is just as brilliant in the same lighting.

Here’s a 4+ carat unheated Mogok ruby.
I was prepared to love it but I am unsure. I thought it had a very nice shade of red but then it seemed a bit flat both in a real life and in photos.
I am wondering if it’s because there are too many inclusions. I compared it with the ruby in my profile photo. Mine looks livelier. It’s a fair comparison because both rubies are 4+carats, from Burma and unheated.
Is this ruby too included? I can see lots of pinpoints which I find cute but perhaps there are too many of them?

I love that it's set east-west, and the mounting is gorgeous! So different. It's tough to say if there are "too many" inclusions, because that's going to be a personal tolerance thing. But for me, yes, I would like to see something a little cleaner (and redder). It's a very fine stone and ring regardless, especially for the size and fact it is untreated!!

Your ruby set with the bow is nicer (that one is especially crazy) but this is really lovely too. Honestly no slouch. I like that it is quite lively compared to say this:

Don’t get me wrong I wouldn’t kick this pink sapphire out of bed but it’s a tad flat. Unless their lighting is especially bad…….

I just know it probably looks a trillion times crazier in real life if it looks that cool in pictures hehe. Especially in the sun.

Thank you @Autumn in New England. I appreciate your feedback :)
I think my tolerance level was breached. I kept wondering why the ruby was behaving like an included spinel. I couldn’t see any pleochroism and it bothered me that I couldn’t find that hint of purple that I like in Myanmar rubies. It did put on a show in the sun, but only at a certain angles.

Haha @mellowyellowgirl I wouldn’t kick that pink sapphire out either! I think the photos probably weren’t the best.
Thank you for sharing your opinion, which was so nicely balanced :) I did think my Crimson was nicer and was wondering if I was biased. I wonder if the setting — all D diamonds — made the ruby look worse. You know me, I do love crazy spinels and rubies, the wilder the better!

Yes, @rattatooE ! It is so hard to capture the look of gems, argh! I agree with you about craziness in the sun. That is my make-or-break criterion for rubies and pink or red spinels. They must fluoresce madlyin the sun or I won’t buy them :D
It does look gorgeous, and the setting is unusual as @Autumn in New England noted.
I was surprised that the setting was rather low, and all the stones are more or less on the same level so it is quite wearable. The trade-off is that there isn’t much to see from the side. It is not sculptural as mine. Phew, I am relieved that although I like it, I won’t be obsessing over this ruby…

Not mine but I’ve been looking for a good amethyst cab, preferably freeform or in a sculptural / artistic cut.

These are to train my eyes on what a good amethyst looks like…

That top cab is as good as it gets, IMO... rich purple color, but not overly dark... and beautiful blue and pink flashes!!

Yes, sisters!!! I almost bought another with clear quartz and howlite.
Ooh, I didn’t know that’s about hematite. I wouldn’t have guessed because it looks such a beautiful sheen. Yes, quite inexpensive and I love it anyway. When I wore it over a red dress, the quartz beads looked pink (which is the next colour, hehe).IMG_1127.jpeg

it all looks so good together
