Hi everyone,

So, amongst all of this diamond height controversy, I rec'd my LM work order today and need to sign off on it. And, I need all of your advice.
I am getting a new "classic" 3 stone setting made. The center diamond is a 1.58 RB, the side stones are 0.23 ct (each) tapered baguettes, sort of long. I have a big ring size, 8 3/4.
So, the work order also says "as low as possible" for setting. I called Leon and he said this is his personal aesthetic but I can have it as high, or low, as I want - I just need to give him a height. His standard is "as low as possible" which is just his personal preference.
Anyone else have a custom LM and should I just go with it or get nit-picky on the mm of height? I went with this jeweler due to his aesthetic, so shouldn't I just let him do his thing? That was my intention. is that what you all did?
I am also wondering, again, do people think a center RB with single tapered baguettes would look better with single or double prongs? Leon says the double prongs will make it more cushion-y looking, but it is a straight up RB. My old (terrible) setting was single and I was hoping for doubles.

Thanks for any and all replies!! I want to get this signed and done and I promise to post photos.

I wanted to post the OLD ring pictures so you can see what I am replacing (same baguettes, new center diamond and setting)

Re: leon diamond height question - piggybacking sammie83's p

Just my personal experience...

I had a Leon solitaire made a couple months ago and while I initially did not want it "as low as possible," I ultimately decided to trust Leon's aesthetic and let him do his thing. Now that I've worn the ring for a bit, I can say I am so glad that it is not any higher since I still catch it sometimes or whack it on counters, doors, etc. (but that may be just me being clumsy ).

When deciding between single or double claw prongs, I went with single because Leon is known for his delicate work and I didn't want the prongs to be an obvious part of the ring. My prongs line up seamlessly with the facets so it almost looks like they aren't there at all. If you want to see more prongs and get that cushion-y look, then I'd say go for double.

Here's a pic with a side view of my "low as possible" setting, just so you can get an idea of what it looks like.

Hope this helps!!

given how simple your ring design is and because you are simply remaking it with a bigger center stone i would let him do it how he wants. i had him set my stone as low as possible and the man does get proportion.................. (single prongs-its a classic round --leave it be)

Re: leon diamond height question - piggybacking sammie83's p

Keep in mind when Leon says "low" he means the culet is almost down to your skin. I think it works for larger stones but with some smaller stones they seem to get lost. Consider if low could be too low for your taste and if you want to see the culet.

Mine was set as low as possible and I am happy with it. I also had double prongs b/c I liked how special they made it. Sometimes when I look at my ring from the side, it looks more like a cushion. I did want the cushion-y feel as my previous ring had very thick solid prongs which squared off the stone, and I really loved that about it.

Re: leon diamond height question - piggybacking sammie83's p

I just got my Leon solitaire (which I am sending back to have haloed just because it doesn't have enough oomph for my taste, but it's BEAUTIFUL) and I was in the same boat as you when we ordered. When I first got the ring, I thought it was too low, but after only a week I realize it's pretty perfect. Especially since yours will be three stones, the height will be less obvious than a simple solitaire. I was also adamant about having double prongs (mine's an AVC) and, quite honestly, it doesn't matter because they are almost invisible except from very close up. For a round, I would go with single prongs.

Re: leon diamond height question - piggybacking sammie83's p

Thanks everyone! I am going to take the weekend to think about it. I think the "as low as possible" is probably fine for me since I wear rubber gloves at times and I should probably go with single prongs as that is the "classic" look.

I will post photos when it gets here!! Already seeing all of yours I know the new setting will be light-years finer than my old one so I will have nothing to be upset about anyhoo.

Your ring will be gorgeous! I also have his classic setting and I think low is fine for larger stones such as yours. I also like single prongs on a round and especially with the side baguettes, His prongs are so delicate that you almost don't see them anyway.

Re: leon diamond height question - piggybacking sammie83's p

Thanks for asking this question! I'm about to do a work order with him too, and was wondering the same thing.

I prefer a lower setting because I don't want to bang it around, but I don't have long slender fingers like some PSers :Up_to_something: so I worry that my short stumpy peasant fingers could make things look "squattier" than they might on someone else. I explained this to Leon, but he still recommends low as possible. I'm inclined to trust his aesthetic judgment, but it's VERY helpful to hear from other from others who have already made the low as possible decision - so thanks for sharing your collective experiences.

Re: leon diamond height question - piggybacking sammie83's p

how about a 1.3 ct. 6mmX6mm princess cut? its that big enough for leon to set as low as possible or should I get him to do it just a tad higher? Also my fiance says she likes the diamond sitting up high but should I tell her she will get used to it being low...
