I am writing this post to get the opinions from all of those who have been through this process and those experts in the field. I recently went to a jeweler as I was looking to change my e ring setting for my p-cut diamond...found one and purchased it. The jeweler measured my stone, etc., and told me it would take about three weeks for the setting to come in, at which point they would set the diamond. He also told me that they would keep the stone overnight b/c it''s a p-cut which he explained can be tricky to set. My question is, should I take my diamond to get it "mapped" so that I know it is my diamond when I pick up my completed ring? Will I be able to tell it''s mine once it is in the setting? I do have a nice stone, only a hair over a carat, and this jeweler does carry the some very nice designer lines, with much bigger stones than mine. Leaving my stone just makes me nervous, and I am looking for ways to give myself the best piece of mind in this process.

Thanks for any and all responses....

Yes, before leaving, look through the loupe or microscope with the jeweller to map the inclusion(s) on the plot. When picking up the completed ring, make sure the inclusion(s) match your plot. This is standard procedure with my local jeweller.

Well does yours have a laser number on it? I would look at it so you can see the inclusions and when you get it back look at them again if you are feeling unsure. I wouldn''t leave my ring w/someone I felt was not reputable but if you feel they are then leave it. Is your diamond insured?

What can you do even if the jeweler does swap stones? I thought of this myself. I would know if it isn''t my diamond, but how would you prove that to anyone? I mean, if it were to happen, does insurance help you out with this...or are you just left with the "other" diamond? Does a map help prove anything (to others)? Thanks

Yes, the map is the proof. It is impossible for 2 diamonds to be the exact same carat weight, colour, physical size and have the exact inclusions at the same spot.

It's best to have a discussion with the jeweler for peace of mind. At minimum, the diamond
should be measured (length, width, depth) as well as any inclusions plotted on your receipt;
also the diamond should be weighed loose and checked carefully for any external inclusions
or special characteristics. When you receive the diamond after it's set..review all the above details
with your jeweler. Read the terms and limitations on your repair receipt when you drop the diamond off before signing it. Ask questions
and get a comfort level with the entire process. A good, reputable and honest jeweler will have no
problems answering your questions or concerns.
